Our mother Alice Marian Fitch Obot was born to Marguerite Elizabeth Torley and Melvin George Fitch on July 11, 1946 in San Francisco, California. She had seven brothers and sisters and finished growing up in South San Francisco, graduating from High School in 1964.
She went on to attended College at San Francisco State University and majored in English. This is where she met her wonderful husband Robertson Etim Akpan Obot whom everyone called “Robert”. He was a foreign student from Nigeria who had come to the United States to get his degree with the intent on returning to Nigeria to help his country.
They married on September 14, 1968 in South San Francisco with her mother, father and sister Margaret in attendance.
Eventually they moved to San Jose while Robert continued his education at San Jose State and they lived in the on-campus housing. While there both of their sons Bassey and Uwem were born.
When Bassey and Uwem were about 4 & 7 they moved to Nigeria to be with Roberts family. They lived there for about 5 years when they decided that it would be better for Bassey and Uwem to be educated in the United States. Alice then brought them back to live with their Grandmother and Aunt Barbara in South San Francisco where they finished their schooling while she returned to Robert in Nigeria.
She returned to the United States in 1983 and had various teaching jobs while Robert stayed in Nigeria since his parents had passed away and he was now the head of the family.
In 1997 when Robert was able to return to the United States, they lived in Santa Clara until Roberts passing in 2005.
She worked locally at Patson’s Press until the company was sold, then she retired and attended all family functions until she was stricken with a tumor in about 2017 and doing many things slowly became more difficult. Thereafter cancer seemed more and more to dominate her life but she was always able to participate in family events.
She died peacefully on Saturday, May 6, 2023 in the Care Home where she was residing.
