Wyvorn Thompson, a matriarch, a titan, a christian, a devoted wife, a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, was born in Long Branch, Panola County Texas on May 5, 1937 to Jesse McGensy Sr. and Mae Kelly Fite as Wyvorn McGensy. She had a traditional southern upbringing: she worked on her family’s farm and on Sundays, she attended church at New Zion Baptist Church of Long Branch with her family. It was at New Zion where she gave her life over to Christ and began singing in the choir.
At the age of 17, Wyvorn moved to Indio and lived with her eldest sister Pearline and husband Otis Shepard. Shortly after relocating, Wyvorn gave birth to her first son, Manuel Deason in 1955. Never steering away from her faith, she met the man who would become her husband of 65 years, Neforia Richard Thompson, at church where she sang in the choir. They fell in love and in less than a year, decided to get married on July 6, 1956 in Yuma, Arizona as witnessed by Glady Thompson and Bon Lee Jackson. Their union would produce two sons, Richard Earl Thompson in 1957 and Gerald Wayne Thompson in 1960. In a few short years, Wyvorn’s sisters and brother would all live in close vicinity of each other and they would have many family gatherings to celebrate birthdays, holidays, and major life events, becoming a very close-knit family living in Indio, in Banning, and in Santa Ana.
In 1964, the family moved to Santa Ana, where she worked various jobs until she worked at Allegan as a machine operator for 13 years until she retired and her husband worked at Disneyland for 30 years until he retired. The two became active church members at Community Temple Baptist Church (formerly known as) where they were some of the founding members and ordained as Deacon and Deaconess under the leadership of Reverend Frank Williams. Throughout the years, whether high or low, Wy and Dick Thompson stayed strong in their faith, family, and love and celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on 7/6/2021.
Her family will miss her humor, laughter, disposition, voice, strength, stubbornness, love and sensitivity, and lastly, her presence. Wyvorn leaves behind a legacy of faith, family, and determination.
