He was one of six siblings: 4 brothers and one sister. Gene is survived by his wife Nancy Sanders-Miles, son Jim , brother Francis, and two great nieces, Keri Vasquez and Lori Baldwin .
Gene and Nancy met at Texas Tech in 1959 while Gene was studying architecture and Nancy was studying to become a teacher. Gene received his bachelor’s in architecture and became a state licensed architect in 1965.
Gene and Nancy were married on October 23, 1959 in the San Marino Presbyterian church where Nancy was a member.
Gene was then drafted into the Army in 1959 and stationed in Germany for 2 years. Gene and Nancy subsequently moved back to California and purchased their first home in Arcadia, California. On June 19, 1966, their son, Jim, was born.
Gene began his career in architecture initially with the Nyberg & Bissner firm, where Gene and his brother, James, would help design the famous Volcano house located in Newberry Springs, CA. After leaving the Nyberg firm, Gene became a draftsman for Denny’s Restaurants.There Gene performed draftsman responsibilities and would become the lead person in charge of many of the Denny’s restaurant projects. After leaving Denny’s Restaurants, Gene opened his own firm, GM & Associates.
Gene officially retired in 2004. However, he continued to use his talents and skills in the field or architecture in the years that followed.
In the 1980’s Gene joined the Gleaners Jail Ministry and became the chief coordinating chaplain, orchestrating and implementing 365 services a year for the entire Orange County area. Even as Gene’s health declined, he remained actively involved in this ministry as it was his passion to serve others.
Gene’s passion was that of a servant. His focus was for others to know the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. He assisted in many of Trinity’s services, including but not limited to: King’s Class, Alpha, usher coordinator, worship leader for Prime Timers and others to name a few. He often said,
“If I can bring one moment of joy to another person, then it’s all worth it.”
Most assuredly, he brought joy to many.
Gene was a dedicated husband, father, friend, servant and mentor.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Trinity United Presbyterian Church, located at 13922 Prospect Ave, Santa Ana, California on Friday, November 5th, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. with a reception to follow in Fellowship Hall. Friends and family are all welcome. The burial will be held in private.
