Phil was a man who didn’t beat around the bush. I think that is why I loved him so much. He cared about genuinely helping others around him. I think he hated me for how much I annoyed him at work, haha but I don’t care! He needed to know how much Jesus loves him ;) 

My deepest condolences go out to Lindsay and Dylan and Chase. Keeping you guys in my prayers forever xo xo  until we all meet again… rest in peace Mr. Smock. 

I first met Phillip in 1984, after I began dating his mother, Karen, we married in 1985.  I had three children, Cinda, Taylor and Kelly, and a home in El Paso’s upper Rio Grande valley.
One afternoon while playing softball I noticed Phil batted right but threw with his left hand!  Years later, I picked him up from playing golf, I asked him why he played golf right-handed?  He said, “Lefty clubs are scarce and expensive.”  He even cut down the shaft on some clubs for Chase to use.    
In school Phil showed a talent for music, tenor sax, and sports.  He played basketball, golf and ran track.  We ran in a few races together, he won second overall in a 5-k run, he also competed in triathlons.  During his sophomore year he won the bronze medal in the 100-m high hurdles at the all-city track meet; there were about ten high schools.  Mid-way through his junior year he moved to live with Sheila and Brad.  When they moved to Chicago, Phil went with them; we saw him on trips to Iowa, via Chicago.
Originally, he moved to Florida to improve his golf game, my father greatly admired that.  We visited him in North Carolina and then Florida, before he married Lindsay.  We had many heartwarming visits to their homes; on one trip Chase even slept with Dylan.  Phil was always grilling something to eat.  Phil was a good son, a fine man, a loving father, and a devoted husband.  Karen (Mom) and I are devastated by his death. Lindsay, Chase, and Dylan, we send you all our love and hope to see you soon!

     I have adored and loved Phillip since before he was born.  I became his aunt when I was only seven years old, so he was always more of a little brother or friend to me.  He lived with our family for almost a year when he was in kindergarten. I spent summers in El Paso with him, and he spent summers on the Iowa farm with us.  There wasn’t ever a dull moment with him.  He kept me on my toes when I would babysit him.  He would liven up the mood whenever he entered the room.  He was so much fun, and he always made me feel like I was one of the most important people on the planet.  

     It has been such an honor growing up with him.  We have been through both some awesome times and some very sad times together.  Even though we haven’t always lived close to each other, we could always pick up a phone and talk about anything that was on our minds.  Our times together over our adult years have been limited, but they were always awesome.  We are forever connected to each other.

     I am so very proud of the bold and wonderful man that Phillip turned into.  He had a wonderful wife and children.  I admired his family.  I was also proud of how his career had grown, yet he always made time for doing fun things with his family.  

     My world is not going to be the same without him.  I wish I could wrap my arms around him.  I will love him forever and he will always be in my heart.  

     My love and sympathy to Lindsay, Chase, Dylan, Karen, Bill, Justin, Heather, Brad and Sheila and our entire family.


Your passing came as a surprise to us all here in Canuts. Your family will be in our thoughts and prayers. May you rest in peace 🙏 

Not sure if it was our 7th or 8th grade year, but we didn't change much. 

Phil was one of the purely good souls here on this earth. He was a loving family man that adored his wife & sons. He was a pure joy to work with. He was hilarious & told the best stories about his growing up years. He was such a people person with a strong moral character plus had a hard work ethic. My heart hurts to know his life was cut short like this...it's so unfair! My heart goes out to his family at this difficult time of grief & loss.

So saddened to learn of Phillip's passing.  I recently relocated to Florida and just last week prior to Hurricane Ian wrote a note on my desk at work to look him up as I knew he was in Florida as well.  Learned of his passing today through a mutual friends facebook page.

I have some wonderful memories of Phillip as we were friends in Elementary/High School.  One of the favorites was a time he spent the night at my house for a slumber party.  My prankster dad put on a halloween mask and wielded an axe and scared several of my friends as he actually hit the front door of our house with the Axe.  Phillip ran over to our den area and proceeded to try and hide near my mom.  My mom had no idea what was up and we all had a great laugh later as we learned it was my dad.  

As our classmates reach our mid-to-late fourties, losing a childhood friend really hits home.  Even though I had lost contact, Phillip will always remain someone I considered a dear friend.  My heart breaks for his family.  My condolences to the Smock family.  Rest easy my friend..

Originally from El Paso, Texas, by way of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Phillip is the fastest gun slinging wordsmith at XLR8 Roofing, literally dropping catches out of thin air line "Rainbows".. His verbal prowess and ability to connect with customers makes him a buddy you’d like to do business with. A local to the Sanford Community, he has his thumb on the pulse of the Central Florida roofing and construction landscape. His experience and project management skills go far and beyond what’s to be expected. A job is not done with Phillip, till it’s done right.

When Phillip is not battling the Florida sun and racking up toll road fees, you can find him with his family enjoying life and staying active, did we mention he’s got a smooth swing on the Golf course. He and his wife Lindsay keep busy with baseball practices, video game time management and chauffeuring two growing boys around over the weekend. #BoyDad

Skills: Resilience to the grit and empathy to the work required. Phillip understands the need to communicate what works and what doesn’t. This transparency builds trust with customers and meets the objectives of any project.

Strengths: Research oriented and asking the right questions at the right time.

I’m so sorry to hear about Phillips’ passing. I went to high school with him. We were in band together. He would pick me up in his light blue VW bug so I wouldn’t have to walk to school. He learned some really good cumbias on his saxophone at my request too! He was such a good friend. RIP  My condolences to his family.
