Gladys D. Maultsby (Nee Crump) peacefully went from Labor to Reward on May 3, 2016 in Altamonte Springs, Florida. Our beloved Gladys was born on October 9, 1933 in Rockingham, North Carolina to the late Gracie Melton and David Crump. Gladys was the third of nine children born to Gracie Melton.
Gladys was educated in Rockingham and graduated Rockingham High School. After graduation she migrated to Newark, New Jersey in pursuit of furthering her education and securing employment. She attended and graduated from the Drake Business School in Newark, with Certificates in Bookkeeping and Shorthand.
Gladys initially met Jerry Maultsby in 1951 in Rockingham, North Carolina and later on a blind date in Newark, NJ. She married Jerry on June 23, 1954. To that union, they were blessed with two sons, Yusuf R. Abdussabur and Jerome K. Maultsby.
Gladys was employed with the City of Newark, NJ as a Supervisor Senior Bookkeeper for many years with the Engineering and Fire Department before retiring. Gladys was a long standing member of the Zion Hill Baptist Church in Newark, NJ before moving to Lake Mary, Florida in 1998. Gladys enjoyed shopping, gardening and traveling with her husband Jerry on cruises to the Caribbean and South America, along with many other places. Gladys made Pilgrimage to the Holy city of Jerusalem in 1985 where she fulfilled a Biblical injunction and was authorized to bear the title of “Jerusalem Pilgrim”.
Gladys was a loving, devoted and cherished wife and mother to family for 62 years. She was preceded in death by her Father and Mother, David Crump and Gracie Melton Miller, her brothers, J.C. Miller, Pastor Robert M. Miller, Frank Roosevelt Miller, two sisters, Mildred Evans and Katie Johnson, three brother-in-laws Haywood Evans, Robert Henry Simpson and Charles Maultsby one nephew, Nebraska Johnson Jr. and nieces, Sharon McArthur and Tina Maultsby.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her loving and devoted husband of 62 years, Jerry Maultsby, cherished sons, Yusuf R. Abdussabur (Rafeekah), Jerome K. Maultsby (Kumi), her adoring Grandchildren: Hakim S. Abdussabur (Vanessa), Jerome Kojo, Jada Kay and Jamal Maultsby, all of whom she deeply treasured and adored. Her 2 sisters Peggy Simpson of Greensboro, NC, Minister Josephine Jackson of Charlotte, NC a brother, William Garfield Miller Sr. (Mattie) of Charlotte, NC, Maternal Aunt Nan Melton Webber of Dover, NJ, sister-in-laws, Hazel Miller of Charlotte, NC, Sylvia Maultsby-Horton of Augusta, GA and Gail Maultsby of Las Vegas, NV and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
