Gil is survived by his wife Lourdes, his daughter Marissa Reyes Holman, his son Alejandro Gilberto Reyes, his stepdaughter Mitzi Perez, his stepson Ryan Nuzzo, and his grandchildren Manuel Colon and Erik, Christopher, and Markus Holman. He also leaves behind his sister Lydia Berrios and brother Orlando Berrios, and several half siblings in Puerto Rico. Family meant everything to Gil and he was a loving husband, father, and friend to all. He leaves behind many close nieces, nephews, cousins, and wonderful family and friends who were with him until the very end.
Gilberto Reyes was born to Carmen Hernandez in Barranquitas, Puerto Rico and lived there until the age of 5. Gil loved visiting Puerto Rico, walking the streets, visiting the churches, and listening to the music that echoed in the night. He lived in various towns in CT such as New Haven, Wallingford, Guilford, and West Haven. Gil was a long time employee with the Southern Connecticut Gas Company. Later in life, Gil and his wife moved to Sorrento, Florida where Gil was happy to soak in the sunshine and spend his free time with family and friends.
Gil was so deeply loved and had a way of touching the lives of everyone he knew. If he wasn’t off seeing the world with his wife and family, he was somewhere laughing and enjoying retirement with those closest to him. Gil had a fierce love of music and always enjoyed sharing his gift by playing classical Spanish guitar, instantly brightening the mood of any event. He also enjoyed fixing things and working on houses, never passing up an opportunity to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. When in CT, Gil would be off visiting his past coworkers, friends and family, and never missing the chance to spend as much time as possible with his children and grandchildren. Gil loved walking along the beach at the West Haven Pier and getting in his 20,000 steps by doing rounds at the Milford Mall.
Gil will forever be remembered for the way he made us laugh and his ability to make everyone feel like family. His heart was always open to those who needed him and he shared that love in the lessons he taught us and the wise words he always seemed to have when we needed them most. Gil’s legacy lives on and we cherish the time that we had with him, knowing that each time it rains he’s sending us a reminder to take the time out of our lives to stop, sit down with a hot cup of coffee and just listen. To take the time to hug our loved ones, to call those who are far, and to remind them that they are loved and that we are proud.
Gil lived his life to the fullest, always ready to try something new. In his memory we ask that you do the same, and live your life without regret and cherish the memories and lessons that shape you along the way.
To quote Marcus Aurelius, “It is not death that a man should fear, but he should fear never beginning to live.”
A special thank you to everyone who was with him, for their loving care and support during his final days. The family would also like to extend their sincerest gratitude towards Highland Funeral Home for being very accommodating and understanding during this difficult time.
The family would like to invite you to join us in a “CELEBRATION OF LIFE” for Gil to be held on Thursday December 20th, between 5:30PM & 8:00PM at the RedTail Golf Club 21600 Covered Bridge Lane Sorrento, FL 32776.
