Tim was an active and curious little boy. He attended Saint Jude the Apostle Catholic School, where he excelled in academics, was an altar server, and enjoyed playing on the parish soccer, basketball and baseball teams. He began his Scouting career as a Cub Scout at Saint Jude, eventually earning the rank of Eagle Scout, of which he was very proud. Tim was later a graduate of Blessed Trinity Catholic High School.
Tim was an excellent student in all subject areas, but particularly in mathematics. His interests in math and science ultimately led him to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech, which he received with Honor. Later he went on to earn a Masters degree in Electrical & Computer Engineering from NC State. While in college, his family would marvel at his math prowess. Solutions to a single homework problem could cover 2 or 3 notebook pages, full of numbers and indecipherable Greek letters and symbols. But to Tim, it was easy.
Most recently, Tim was employed by the Georgia Tech Research Institute, conducting research, which was his dream.
All who knew Tim were impressed with not only his obvious great intelligence, but also his gentle and kind spirit. Animals and children were instinctively drawn to him. Children, especially his young nieces and nephews, clung to him and climbed over him, seeking his closeness. Animals --- even those that were normally aloof --- sought Tim’s attention and affection.
Tim enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. Going out for barbeque, breakfast, and ice cream. Playing card games. Going for walks, especially with the dogs --- first, his beloved Jack Russell Terrier, Tipper, and more recently, the family dog, Alfie. He loved boat rides on Lake Burton, especially when all the family piled onto the pontoon boat to watch the 4th of July fireworks. And he enjoyed watching and chuckling at silly comedy shows on TV.
Tim’s sensitivity really shone during Christmas and birthday celebrations. He thoughtfully selected the perfect gift for each recipient, carefully considering their interests, experiences, and desires. It was always a special treat unwrapping a gift from Tim, and finding something unexpected, yet so perfect.
The family’s Irish heritage was of great interest to Tim. He took pride in his heritage, and researched Irish traditions and history. Tim had a small collection of Irish Christmas ornaments that he enjoyed displaying on the tree each year.
As a young child, he was our “Timpie”, as he called himself. Later, in school, he was our rambunctious and funny Timothy. As a young adult, he shortened his name to Tim, which is how most of his adult friends and acquaintances knew him.
In the words of Dr. Seuss, “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” Tim brought much joy and happiness to his friends and family during his lifetime. Though Tim may have left us too soon, we will not forget the moments with him that were filled with love, laughter, and joy. Tim, you will be deeply missed, but your light will continue to shine in our hearts forever.
FAMILY
In addition to his parents, Tim is survived by sister Meghann Murray Brackett (Andy), sister Georgia Murray Pagel (Jimmy), brother Grif Murray, grandmother Marilu McCarty, 3 nieces, 2 nephews, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
