Suzanne Rowlee Guyton, 84, of Dunwoody, GA died peacefully with her loving family at her bedside on November 28, 2014 at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta. Mrs. Guyton was born in Albany, Oregon and graduated from Albany High School. She graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in Home Economics and was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority for 65 years.
She was a champion for education. After graduating from college, Suzanne used her degree to teach Home Economics with the Shoshone Indian Tribe at the Fort McDermitt Indian Reservation on the Oregon-Nevada border. In the late ‘70s she substitute-taught in DeKalb County, GA, eventually becoming a reading specialist helping ESOL students for 13 years at Henderson High School in Atlanta. Suzanne also taught sewing lessons through various community groups in the 1950s to 1980s.
Suzanne was an involved community member in all of places she resided during her life: her native Albany, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Cleveland, and finally Dunwoody, where she lived for the past 44 years. Suzanne was very active at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church in Dunwoody, having served on numerous committees for many years, and was honored with a lifetime achievement award this month. She was a big proponent of voting and volunteered to staff several polling stations in Dunwoody for over 15 years. Suzanne also volunteered at the American Red Cross, assisting in their blood drives.
She was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband, Richard John “RJ” Guyton. During their 56 years of marriage, they traveled to all 50 states and numerous countries abroad. She is survived by her son John H. Guyton, his wife Lisa, and their children, Eric and Alexandra; son James W. Guyton, his wife Lupe, and their children Diana, Alicia, Richard, and Sabrina; daughter Julie Guyton Campbell, her husband Clay, and their daughters Ashley, Brooke, and Kelsey.
A Memorial Service for Suzanne Guyton will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, December 5th at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church, 1978 Mt. Vernon Road, Dunwoody, GA 30338.
