He is preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence Addison Thomson and Dorothy Holley Thomson; grandparents, Robert Cornwell Holley and Clyde Kilgore Holley and James Robert Thomson and Ruth Dorman Thomson; and several beloved aunts and uncles.
Dr. Thomson is survived by sisters, Mrs. Virginia Thomson Meadows (Lawrence), of Tyrone, GA and Mrs. Frances Elizabeth Thomson Holliman (Darby), of Brooks, GA; a brother, Mr. John Matthew Thomson (Melissa), of Dahlonega, GA; nieces and nephews, Jennifer Meadows LaCount, Autumn Cheyenne Meadows, Emily Marie Thomson, Addison Robert Thomson, Thomas Samuel Holliman, and Henry James Holliman; great-nieces, McKenna Holley Bannon and Leah Rose LaCount; aunts and uncle, John and Pat Holley and Bettye Jeane White Thomson; also, many cousins, very dear friends, and special patients.
Dr. Thomson graduated from Memphis University School. He attended the University of Alabama where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree with a focus on Organ Performance. While attending the University of Alabama, Dr. Thomson was a member of Mallet Hall. After receiving his degree, Dr. Thomson moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan to attend the University of Michigan earning his Masters of Music in Organ Performance.
Dr. Thomson had a passion and a gift for playing the organ. He shared his gift with many by playing the organ in several churches while attending college as well as later in life. His family and friends also deeply enjoyed his music when he would play for them.
While in his late thirties, Dr. Thomson realized he also had a deep passion for helping others by pursuing a second career as a pediatrician. He attended the Emory School of Medicine, graduating in 1995. He completed his residency at the University of California, Irvine.
In 1999, Dr. Thomson, “Dr. T” as he was affectionately known by his patients and office staff, opened his own medical practice, Auburn Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. In 2002, he transferred the practice to Dacula, GA and renamed the practice Hamilton Mill Pediatrics. Dr. T enjoyed serving his patients and the community for many years until he retired from practice in 2022. Dr. Thomson also taught at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Suwanee, GA for many years. He liked helping new students learn about medicine and helping them complete their pediatric rotations at his practice.
Dr. Thomson enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Dr. Thomson especially loved spending time with his nieces and nephews, hearing about their interests and encouraging them, as well as sharing about some of his fun and adventurous memories while growing up. He also truly enjoyed helping others out. While practicing medicine, he was always prepared to return a phone call for a sick patient. Often times, he would even make house calls. He truly cared for all of his patients and their families. He also enjoyed playing the organ at St. Mary and St. Martha’s Episcopal Church in Dacula, GA for several years.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation or to the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Foundation.
Funeral service will be held Saturday October 7, 2023 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Sandy Springs Chapel Funeral Directors, burial will follow at Arlington Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service on Saturday from 12:00 pm until the service time.
