Robert W. Sheldon passed away on October 26, 2013 at the age of 92. He was born in Atlanta, Ga. on October 22, 1921. He attended and graduated Boys High and then attended Georgia Tech. At Georgia Tech he played wingback on the football team, winning his letter. After graduation in 1943 he immediately joined the United States Marine Corp as a platoon leader in the Third Division. He participated in the campaigns for Bougainville, Guam, and Iwo Jima. He received the Purple Heart for wounds received on Iwo Jima. Returning to Atlanta he married Jean Russell in 1947 and remained with her for 62 years until her death in 2009. Bobby is survived by sons Robert Sheldon Jr. and wife Vicki, Russell Sheldon and wife Melanie and Michael Sheldon; grandchildren Samantha Gates, Tripp Sheldon, Ryan Sheldon, Weston Sheldon, Hillary Sheldon and Elizabeth Sheldon; great grandchildren Hunter Gates and Logan Gates; and his sister Elizabeth Folks. A devoted husband, father and friend, Bobby spent his life running a business, devoting time and money to charities and countless hours of coaching Little League or water skiing kids or indulging in his life-long love affair with Lake Rabun in North Georgia. Visitation will be Friday November 1 from 6:00- 9:00 pm at the Sandy Springs Chapel, 136 Mount Vernon Hwy. in Sandy Springs. Memorial service will be Nov. 2 at 2:00 pm, at the Roswell Presbyterian Church, 755 Mimosa Blvd., Roswell Georgia. A gathering will occur at Bobby’s house for those wishing to attend after the service.
