Dr. Paul C. Atwater, 69, of Sandy Springs, GA, passed away Wednesday at home surrounded by family following a brave battle with cancer. He was born July 14, 1946 in Charleston, SC, the son of the late Dr. John S. and Virginia Zipplies Atwater. Dr. Atwater graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1968 and Medical College of Georgia in 1972. He then completed his surgery internship at Saint Mary’s Medical Center, San Francisco and an Otolaryngology fellowship at Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta. For 30 years, Dr. Atwater practiced medicine specializing in Otolaryngology at Piedmont Hospital. He was a founding member of ENT of Georgia and served as President of the Metro Atlanta Society for Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, from 20002001. Dr. Atwater enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was an active sailor and boater at his lake house in South Carolina. He also served as Fleet Captain at University Yacht Club on Lake Lanier. He was an avid reader, arts enthusiast and an accomplished painter and known to his friends as a renaissance man. Dr. Atwater is survived by his wife of 33 years, Ann Collins Atwater; sons, Carleton Atwater and wife Sarah Hastings of Cambridge, MA, Patrick Atwater of Nashville, TN; brother, Dr. Spencer Atwater and wife Mern of Asheville, NC; sister, Libba Drewicz and husband Tom of Dunwoody, GA and his entire extended family. The family will receive friends Sunday, October 4 4-6pm at H.M. Patterson and Son, Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Road NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. Funeral services will be held Monday, October 5 at 11am at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church, 805 Mt Vernon Hwy NW, Atlanta, GA 30327 . Interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park.
