Katherine Brickman Alley died November 3, 2015. She was 92
years old. Katherine was born and spent her early years in
Columbia, South Carolina. She, along with her brother, sister
and cousins spent her summers on her grandparents' farm in
Fountain Inn, SC.
After graduating from Columbia High School, Katherine attended
University of South Carolina before moving to Chattanooga,
Tennessee to work for TVA. While there, she shared an apartment
with 3 other girls. They became life long friends who loved to tell
stories from their days as roommates in Chattanooga. It was while
working at TVA that Katherine became "Kay" due to her practice of
signing her office correspondence "K". Her friends introduced her to
another TVA employee, William Alley. They wed in 1946, and were
married for nearly 60 years, until his death in 2005 at age 92.
Kay and Bill moved to Atlanta so that Bill could attend Georgia Tech.
After graduating, Bill went to work for the Army Corps Of Engineers,
and they eventually settled in the (then remote) suburb of Atlanta
known as Sandy Springs. Kay worked for Astor Foods as a bookkeeper
and office manager until she retired after 25 years to spend time with
her beloved grandchildren, Justin and Nicole.
Kay really embraced her role as a loving grandmother. The grandchildren
spent many happy hours at their house, with its large wooded yard, on
River Valley Rd., where the steep, curving driveway was perfect for Big
Wheels. Kay lived in the house she and Bill had built for 47 years, until it
was taken and razed by the DOT to make way for a new road. She then
relocated to East Cobb.
Kay is survived by son David Alley, daughter Suzanne Alley, grandchildren
Justin DeNucci and Nicole DeNucci, nieces Jean Dawson, Greta Brickman,
and nephew William Brooks. She was preceded in death by her husband
William Alley, sister Dorothy Brooks, brother William Brickman, and niece
Veronica Brickman.
Family members will be receiving visitors from 5-8 pm. Friday, November 27 at Sandy Springs Chapel. A graveside service will be held 11:00 am Saturday, November 28 at Arlington Memorial Park.
