Our mother and grandmother, Mary Louise Rogers Davis, born on October 13, 1921, passed into life eternal on January 31, 2018 at the age of 96. She was the attentive daughter of Henry R. Rogers and Annie Estelle Glore Rogers. She was the adored wife of the late Dr. Marion Bedford Davis, Jr. for 72 amazing years, and the mother of four children.
She was a descendant of Abram Glore, who acquired property in what became Mableton in 1840, and, along with his family, was instrumental in the founding of Mableton. A lifelong resident of Atlanta, she was a proud graduate of Fulton High School and the University of Georgia. She was a charter member of Northside Drive Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and served on the building committee for the Sanctuary building, among other things.
Her career as a porcelain artist spanned 56 years. She was well-known as a teacher of the art and served as both Georgia and National Presidents of the World Organization of China Painters. Her crowning achievement was to conceive and direct a project for Georgia artists to create 18 place settings of china depicting wildflowers of Georgia. This was presented to the governor’s mansion under Governor Joe Frank and Mrs. Elizabeth Harris. It was her honor and delight to host countless painting seminars in her home studio, featuring over 30 well-known teachers of china painting from all over the world.
She was unhappy being idle. She filled her later days with writing her life story, painting china, cooking amazing traditional Southern foods, and visiting with family. Until her last day, she was planning new projects.
Louise was preceded in death by her parents, her three siblings and her loving husband. She is survived by four children, Mary Anne James (Rick), Merrill Bedford Davis, Sr. (Ellen), Patricia Stortz, and Nancy Davis; seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren; and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Saturday from 3-5 PM at Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Rd. SE, Sandy Springs. Reception to be held Sunday at 1:30 PM at Northside Drive Baptist Church, 3100 Northside Drive, Atlanta, with Funeral Service to follow at 3 PM and burial at Arlington Memorial Park, 201 Mt. Vernon Hwy NW, Sandy Springs.
The family asks that any donations be made in her memory to Northside Drive Baptist Church, 3100 Northside Drive, Atlanta, GA 30305.
