Josephine (“Josie”) Prescott Digges Reid passed away at her home Monday morning at the age of 90. She is survived by her children Harvey and wife Mary Beth, Susan Reid Sherrill-Beard and husband Bob Beard, and Bill and wife Lorraine; four grandchildren (Jackson, Jonathon, and Melissa Reid (Angeli) and Scott Sherrill), and 3 great grandchildren. She was predeceased in death by her husband of 67 years, Harvey Jackson (“Jack”) Reid (2004) and her brother, Edward William Digges, of Annapolis, Maryland. A 67 year resident of Atlanta (56 years in Sandy Springs), she was originally from Baltimore, graduating from the Bryn Mawr School for Girls, where she excelled in academics, athletics, and bridge. She attended Mount Holyoke College on an academic scholarship, double majoring in math and physics. Upon graduation from college, she worked for the National Security Agency in Washington, DC, where she met her beloved husband. Together they were a team in all respects, and, in true Josie fashion, she waited until both their birthdays passed (Sept. 9 and 10), before departing. Josie was an expert in genealogy and her family heritage, which included strong New England and Virginia roots and lineage back to England. She traveled extensively domestically and abroad to verify the accuracy of genealogical records. She was a longstanding member of the Ft. Peachtree Chapter of the DAR, the Dr. Andrew Turnbull Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Colonists, the Georgia Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the Founders and Patriots of America, the Magna Charta Dames, the Huguenot Society of Georgia, and the Women Descendants of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Co. In her spare time, Josie could normally be found playing bridge with friends. She was a longtime member of St. Phillips Cathedral in Atlanta, Georgia and the Cherokee Town and Country Club. The family is grateful for the wonderful and loving care provided to Josie, by Rita, Jacque, Carmelita, Catherine, Cassandra, Nicole, Reaver, Brenna, and Emma, during the last year. The funeral service will be Friday, September 15 at 2:00 pm at Sandy Springs Chapel, 136 Mt. Vernon Highway, N.E., Sandy Springs, GA, with burial to follow at Arlington Memorial Park.
