John was born in Asheville, NC on February 1, 1944, to Jack C. and Betty (Patton) Self. He was raised in Mebane, NC where he attended Mebane High School and was a quarterback for the Mebane High Tigers. He helped the Tigers win their 7th straight Mid-state Championship his senior year.
After graduation, John attended NC State before enlisting in the United States Army. After serving for four years as an officer, John left the Army and began his career in the field of architecture. He met his wife, Janis (Coe) Self when he designed her home in Billerica, MA in 1977.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Betty Self, his wife, Janis Self, and sister, Teresa (Self) Swain.
John is survived by his sister, Janice (Self) Turner, daughters, Maria Teems (Ricky), Andrea Flagg (Michael), Jennifer (Self) Smith (Ben), and Candace Self, grandchildren, Tiffany, Britni, Kaitlin, Jackson, and Taylor, and four great-granddaughters.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 3, 2022, at 11 AM at H. M. Patterson and Son-Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Road NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The American Heart Association, 10 Glenlake Parkway NE, #400, Atlanta, GA 30328.
