John, the son of Josephine Connors Grant and John William Grant, Jr., was born October 23, 1927. As a boy he attended E. Rivers School and Fritz Orr’s camp. John graduated from Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia and Emory University, where he received a B.B.A. in Finance. After graduation, he worked for several years for SunTrust Bank and then served two years in the U.S. Army.
John married the love of his life, Louise (Weesie) Mandeville on December 30, 1953.
He then began his career in real estate developing his family’s land around the Cherokee Town Club which was the home his grandparents, Annie Inman Grant and John William Grant, Sr., built in 1917. John lived in this home for the first 10 months of his life.
He was active for many years in the brokerage and management of commercial real estate in downtown Atlanta. He also looked after his family’s farm, Wildfair, in Albany, Georgia for 13 years after the deaths of his parents.
John was predeceased by his son, John W. Grant, IV, and his two sisters, Lillian Rudolph and Sarah Frances Cole.
He is survived by his daughters, Lochrane Grant and Josephine Lindsley, and his four grandchildren, who are near and dear to his heart, William Grant Lindsley, Camille Mandeville Lindsley, Austin Grant Davids, and Laura Mandeville Davids.
John was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He had a lifelong involvement with the Atlanta YMCA, serving on both the Northside and Metro Boards. He also served on the Boards of the Atlanta Music Festival Association and the downtown Atlanta Kiwanis Club, where he was a member for 48 years. He coached boys’ basketball at Peachtree Presbyterian Church for several years. John was a member and director of the Piedmont Driving Club and Peachtree Golf Club, and an Emeritus member of the Atlanta Board of Realtors.
His greatest blessings were his times with Weesie, his wife of 60 years. He loved dancing with her, being with his family, tennis, golf, hunting, the Peanuts comic strip, good singers and travel. John’s friends added great joy to his life, and he made them until the end of his life.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, the 4th of January at eleven o'clock at the First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, 1328 Peachtree Street. Friends are cordially invited to visit with the family following the services at the church. Arrangements by H. M. Patterson & Son Arlington Chapel.
