Jerry Binger Hatcher passed away on May 14, 2023 at the age of 71, after a courageous year-long battle with Glioblastoma brain cancer. Born and raised in Atlanta, Jerry attended Sandy Springs High School and then went on to graduate from Georgia Tech. An active member of Sigma Nu, he served as Lieutenant Commander and was a devoted fraternity brother. He loved Yellow Jackets football and was involved in their award-winning cheer squad for several years during college. He graduated from Emory Law school in 1977 and went on to practice litigation for close to 40 years. He was dedicated to seeking justice through representing his many clients and was a faithful student of the rule of law.
Jerry had multiple loves. His passion for baseball began at a young age, playing Little League and all through high school. He was a diehard Braves fan, attending games weekly and enjoying games on television until the very end of his life. He loved football as well, working as a team manager in high school and becoming a loyal spectator of both Georgia Tech sports and Auburn University, where his daughters both attended. Jerry loved vacationing in the Florida panhandle, specifically Grayton Beach, where he bicycled endlessly along 30-A and enjoyed going out to eat, finishing meals with a piece of key lime pie. An avid lifelong reader, he was happiest surrounded by his large collection of books. Jerry was a dedicated student of history. He visited almost every Civil War battlefield in his lifetime and anyone who knew him was aware of his extensive knowledge of WWII. He lived by Churchill’s quote, “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”
Jerry was a deeply devoted father to the two loves of his life - Anna Carroll and Mary Grace. His desire to expand their understanding of the world and history was accomplished through travel. Together the three of them visited many places across the country throughout the girls’ childhood. In later years, he took many trips to visit Anna and his beloved grandson Mark in Oregon, and to visit Mary Grace, while she was residing in Rome, Italy.
To know Jerry was to know his affinity for using many funny voices and accents, and his appreciation for quirky humor. He thoroughly enjoyed studying faith with his men’s Bible study group and in later years cherished playing poker with fraternity brothers, where his proudest win equaled around $5. Jerry loved listening to music. He appreciated everything from country tunes to Broadway musicals, and enjoyed his many years of attending Jazz Fest in New Orleans. He was always taking photographs of architecture, landscapes and of his girls growing up. A day rarely went by where he didn’t enjoy his most favorite - a traditional Coca-Cola classic.
Mr. Hatcher is preceded in death by his parents, Henry Maurice Hatcher Jr. and Mary Beth (Binger) Hatcher. He is survived by his daughters, Anna Carroll Hatcher and Mary Grace Hatcher; his cherished grandson, Mark Abel James; brothers, Henry M. Hatcher III (Chris), Alan Barry Hatcher (Debbie); sisters, Meridith McDowell (Steve), Maureen Conte (Bob); and several nieces and nephews.
