Helen Carnathan Ewing passed away during the morning of Sunday, January 8, 2017 of complications due to a fall. She was the second daughter of Benjamin Gilmer Carnathan and Lafayette Eleanor Word Carnathan, both predeceased. She was predeceased by her husband of 34 years, Frank Kern Ewing, Sr. in 1983, and by her oldest sister Jemmie Ann Coates Titus in 2000.She is survived by her three sons, Frank K. Ewing, Jr., of Houston, Texas, Dr. Gilmer C. Ewing of Fair Oaks, California, Matthew B. Ewing of Sandy Springs, Georgia, and her nephew George H. Coates, III of Chesapeake City, Maryland. She had been a 50+ year member of several chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution and is an ancestor of Charles Word II, who was killed during the crucial Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780, and his wife, Elizabeth Adams Word, the niece of the second President of the United States, John Adams. She had also been a member of The Voters Guild of Metropolitan Atlanta, Rabun Gap-Nacoochee Club, Tallulah Falls Club, as well as a member of the Capital City Club. She attended the former North Fulton High School in Buckhead and then the University of Georgia in Athens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Christ Church of Atlanta, P.O. Box 76320, Atlanta, Georgia 30358. Visitation will be held at Sandy Springs Chapel, located at the corner of Sandy Springs Circle, across from the new Sandy Springs City Center from 12:00pm-2:00pm on Friday January 13, 2017. A graveside Funeral Service will take place following visitation at 2:00pm at Arlington Memorial Park Cemetery located at 201 Mt. Vernon Hwy Sandy Springs, GA 30328, in the Oak Lawn section.
