

Elaine M. Phelan, 93, of Atlanta, died August 28, 2013. Mrs. Phelan was born April 30, 1920 in Falmouth, Massachusetts to Charles and Marguerite Hansen. She grew up in New London, Connecticut and met her first husband, Mervin Allmon. Together they were blessed with their first born son, Jeffrey Allmon. Later, Elaine was widowed and became a single mother when Mervin Allmon’s submarine was sunk in the Pacific Ocean during World War II. Several years later Mrs. Phelan met her future husband, Joseph Patrick Phelan Jr. and together they raised five children. Elaine was a loving wife and caring mother. Her children were the center of her life. In 1958, the family moved to Atlanta, where, alongside family life, she was an active member of the Catholic Church and was president of The Ladies Guild. She was an active volunteer at St. Joseph’s Hospital for over fifty years. She was also an avid golfer and president of the Ladies Golf Association for several years at East Lake Country Club. Mrs. Phelan is preceded in death by her loving husband, Joseph P. Phelan. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffrey and Martha Allmon, Joseph P. Phelan, III and Jill Phelan, Michael John Phelan and Danell Phelan; two daughters and son-in-law, Maureen and Thomas Pate, and Kathy Houston Proctor; ten grandchildren, Laney Cahillane, husband Dan Bryan, Samuel Edwin Houston, IV, Allen Fleming Davis, Michael Phelan, wife Vanessa, Kelly Mason, husband Jacob, and Marie Phelan, Kristen Proctor Connor, husband Matt, and Brandon Proctor, Senter Robertson Smith, wife Kelley, Roger Merry Smith, and Andrew Pate, wife Meghan. Also 11 great-grandchildren and one sister Jean Murphy Gifford in Acton, MA. A funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday, August 31st at twelve o’clock noon at All Saints Catholic Church, Dunwoody, GA. Father Richard B. Morrow, a long-time friend and pastor will officiate with internment to follow in the Arlington Memorial Park.
