Daniel A. Dodson, Sr., age 82, lost his long battle with Parkinson’s Disease and died on December 14, 2017 at his residence. Born in Omaha, Nebraska on February 1, 1935 to Samuel Clarence Dodson and Agnes Steyer Dodson, he was a graduate of Omaha’s Creighton University. In 1958, Dan wed Shala Mary Andrews of Omaha, the love of his life, and embarked on an exciting life and distinguished advertising career that started with his hosting a popular Saturday television show called “Teen Party,” and later with senior positions at Schlitz and McCann-Erickson, where he sparked creative work on the iconic commercials and promotions for Coca-Cola, among others. In 1983, Dan founded Daniel Dodson Inc. and a couple years later co-founded Mastermind Marketing, Inc. with his oldest son Dan – still in business at the iconic thinker building at the intersection of West Peachtree and Peachtree in midtown. He later helped his younger son Rick start a fine art business that imported and sold fine oil paintings.
Dan’s kind spirit and creative fire provided mentorship and an example for countless young ad people over the years. He was also very giving and advised and contributed his time to many organizations including the Atlanta Zoo and the initiative for making Sandy Springs a city. His love for learning, photography, new technology, gadgets and cars was lifelong. Besides his sons Dan II and Rick (now deceased), Dan was beloved by grandchildren Dan III, Rachel and Dan II’s wife Maria and son Chris Samila. He also leaves behind daughters-in law, Melinda and Terri along with numerous nieces and nephews. Dan is pre-deceased by his brother Jim and sister Elaine and both parents, all of Omaha. A memorial service will be held at Sandy Springs Chapel at 1:00 PM on Monday, December 18, 2017 with reception beginning at 12:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Parkinson’s Foundation (www.Parkinson.org).
