Charles Mabry Duncan Sr.

Charles Mabry Duncan, Sr., 85, died March 23, 2012 after a long dementia related illness. He was a life-long resident of Sandy Springs having been born on what is now Sandy Springs Place on September 1, 1926. He was the son of the late Christopher Early Duncan and Maude Cecil Mabry Duncan and was the great, great grandson of Robert Watson Mabry, a pioneer and early settler of Cobb County. Charles attended Fulton County Schools and became a self-made man being a survivor of the Great Depression of the 1930’s. He learned life skills which taught him the traits of integrity, honesty and generosity that formed the man he became. He was a quiet man, but had a sense of humor and wit that brought smiles and laughter to all who knew him. He was a business man working in finance and real estate most of his adult life. He held a Real Estate Broker’s license and was an appraiser and investor working in several firms, then owning his own company, Charles M. Duncan Realty before ending his career with Metro Brokers. Charles had a love for gardening and enjoyed growing vegetables which he shared with family and friends as well as all types of flowers and plants. His yard in the spring and summer was a beautiful showcase of blooms. He could build or repair most anything and never thought to buy anything new when the old could be repaired. His family was his pride and joy and the love he had for his wife, children and grandchildren was beyond compare. He was a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ whom he strove to follow and was a member of First Baptist Church of Sandy Springs for 56 years. There he served on numerous committees, was a Church Trustee for one term and always offered help when needed. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Martha Craft Duncan who was his greatest encourager, companion and love of his life. Also predeceased in death were two sisters, Katherine Duncan Cain and Louise Duncan Hamrick. Brothers: Cecil Duncan, George Duncan, Lloyd Duncan, Floyd Duncan and Leroy Duncan. He is survived by daughters and sons in law: Nancy and Bob Cloudt of Barnesville, Cathy and Herb Young of Wake Forest, N.C. and son and daughter-in-law, Charlie and Connie Duncan of Marietta. Grand children and their spouses: Kevin and Meyling Cloudt, Michael and Heather Cloudt, Jedd and Lisa Lake, Spencer and Megan Young, Ben Young, Sara Anne Duncan (and finance Will Grimes), and Charlie Duncan, lll as well as six great-grandchildren with an additional two due in mid summer. He is also survived by a brother, Aubrey Duncan of Atlanta and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 29, 2012 at Sandy Springs Chapel Funeral Home 136 Mt.Vernon Hwy., Sandy Springs, GA. at 2:00 p.m. Family visitation will occur one hour prior to the service. Rev. David Shivers will officiate. Burial will take place in Arlington Memorial Park.
