Ms. Shumate was born on October, 21, 1941 in Birmingham, Alabama. She completed her education with a bachelor degree in Sociology from East Tennessee State University. She started her family in Johnson City, TN, eventually settling in the Atlanta area to raise her two daughters and build a career in banking.
She is survived by her two daughters, Amy Elizabeth Shumate and Nancy Shumate Garrett (Jason), as well as, her grandchildren Ruby Elizabeth Garrett, Eloise Emily Garrett, and Grace Hart Garrett. Carolyn is preceded in death by her parents Glover E. Gash and Eula B. Gash, as well as, her siblings Shirley A. Gash and George E. Gash.
A private burial service will be held at Arlington Memorial.
