William F. Doyle, 88, formerly of Weymouth and Abington, MA, passed away quietly at Bourne Manor Nursing Home on Sunday, June 15, 2015. Bill was the son of the late Thomas and Gertrude (Dunningan) Doyle of Weymouth, and brother of the late Thomas Doyle of Weymouth, John Doyle of Rockland, Gertrude Tucker of Abington, and M. Lois O'Brien of Rockland. Bill is survived by his sister-in-law, Joan Doyle of East Bridgewater, nephews Daniel O'Brien Jr., of Brookfield, CT, Timothy O'Brien of East Sandwich, Thomas Doyle Jr., Leo Doyle of Yarmouth, Joseph Doyle of Colorado Springs, CO, Steven Whelan of Vidor, TX, Jonathan Doyle of Rockland, and nieces Patricia Arp of Cheyenne, WY, Jacquelyn Whelan of Portsmouth, RI, and Mary Casavant of S. Weymouth. He was also the uncle to the late Thomas O'Brien of Gillette, WY.
Bill was born on September 21, 1925, and attended Weymouth High School, where he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. He left high school in his senior year to join the U.S. Army at age 18. He was in the 103rd Infantry from 1943-1945 and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was captured and spent six months in a German prison camp as a prison of war. After an honorable discharge, he was employed as a truck driver by Coca-Cola and later Nissen Bakery. He frequently enjoyed attending the Raynham dog track and ballroom dancing with his long-time girlfriend, the late Marjorie Connolly of Holbrook.
There will be a graveside memorial service at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, June 20, 2014. Procession from Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 40 MacArthur Boulevard, Bourne, MA, at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to www.vfwfoundation.org.
