Norman B. Hallas passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 21, 2022. Norman was born July 28, 1938 to Harry and Mabel (Buchanan) Hallas. He was the husband of the late Genevieve Audrey (Meegan) Hallas.
Norman attended Newton High School where he developed a passion for all things mechanical, especially cars and airplanes, and this passion would drive the direction of much of the rest of his life. While still in his teens he learned to work on and eventually race cars. After high school, he attended Boston University and studied aircraft airframe and power plant design, but left BU before graduating to enlist in the Air Force. While in the Air Force, he was stationed in Colorado and worked as a fueling specialist on a crew for the Titan I ICBM missile. In Colorado, he continued to pursue his passion for racing where he built several Corvette drag cars and held several nation records for his class. It was while in the Air Force and stationed in Nebraska, he met his future wife of 43 years, Genevieve Audrey Meegan and the two were married in 1967. The couple relocated back to the east coast and Norman began a career as an air traffic controller and working at Bradlee International Airport. They welcomed their first child, Susan in 1968, followed by Bryan in 1970. While growing up, Norman also spent most summers at his family’s cottage in Dennis Port, where he developed a love for Cape Cod and decided that this is where he would eventually like to raise his family. In the mid 1970’s, he transferred to Otis Air National Guard Base, and the family settled in Sandwich, in the house he would live in for the rest of his life. Norman retired from the FAA in 1994. He had many hobbies over the years including riding motorcycles, boating, golfing and attending musical performances. He and Genevieve also liked to travel and especially enjoyed going on cruises with their group of friends known as the ‘Cruise Club’. It was on a cruise to Alaska where Norman eventually reached the milestone of having visited all 50 states.
Norman was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was Grampy to 4 grandchildren, all of them boys. The grandsons all lived close by and Norman was proud to watch their sporting and school events.
Norman was predeceased by Genevieve in 2010, and is survived by his brother Thomas Hallas of Framingham, his daughter Susan Proto and husband Daniel and their two sons Ryan and Casey of Centerville, son Bryan and wife Christina and their sons Ethan and Tanner of Sandwich, as well as several cousins.
Burial will be private. A celebration of life will take place January 14, 2023 at 2:00 pm at the Holly Ridge Golf Course in Sandwich, MA.
