Joseph Alves, Jr. of Pageland, South Carolina passed away with his family by his side at his home on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 from cancer. He was the eldest child and only son born to the late Joseph Alves, Sr. and Sabina Fernandez. He was born in a house in East Sandwich, Massachusetts, where he was raised. He was predeceased by his three sisters, Diana James, Marie Pina and Shirley Badgett.
As a young man, Joseph worked on the cranberry bogs with his Dad. Later, he worked in factories in Connecticut, where he furthered his education and became a licensed electrician. He retired from the State of Connecticut.
Joseph is survived by four children, Cheryl Alves Chester of Wareham, MA, Joseph Alves, III of Onset, MA, Janice Viera of Southington, CT and Lori Fields of Los Angeles, CA. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
In 1991, Joseph married his wife, Debra Alves, who also survives him. They moved from Connecticut, to Maine and lastly settled in South Carolina, where he was surrounded by 2 brothers-in-law, 2 sisters-in-law, their spouses and children.
Joseph had many names (Duke & Sunny), just to mention a few, but he had much more family and friends, who truly loved him, up and down the East Coast, in Canada and even on the West Coast.
On November 18, 2012 while visiting Oasis Church in Los Angeles, Joseph confirmed that he had received Jesus Christ as his savior.
Joseph enjoyed being outdoors, snowmobiling and dancing. He was a diehard New England Patriot fan.
Joseph was called home to be with his heavenly Father on March 12, 2013.
Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 pm on Friday, March 15, 2013 in the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 154 Route 6A in Sandwich and Saturday from 10 am until the time of the funeral service at 11 am. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
