Jane Vermilyea Govoni, 80, passed away at home on February 22, 2024 after a brief battle with cancer. She was born in Framingham, MA to Ralph Arnott Vermilyea and Doris Elizabeth (Way) Vermilyea. She was raised in both Sudbury and Maynard, before moving to Sandwich in 1959, where she resided ever since. Jane graduated from the Henry T. Wing School and later married her high school sweetheart, Gerry Govoni. She was a graduate of the Cape Cod Hospital School of Practical Nursing. After graduation, she worked at Cape Cod Hospital until starting a family in the mid-60’s. After her children started school, she worked in the cafeteria for the Sandwich Public School system at both the Wing School and Sandwich Jr/Sr High School, for more than a decade. Jane also spent time attending classes at Fisher Junior College. Later in life, she worked at Piece Goods and Cape Cod Crafters in Hyannis, as well as the Dunbar Tea Room and the Dexter Grist Mill in Sandwich.
When Jane was younger, she enjoyed playing the piano and sewing, often making her own clothes and doing alterations for family and friends. She also enjoyed family time at Sandy Neck Beach and long weekends with her husband and friends in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Gerald Marino Govoni, and her parents. Those left to cherish her memory are her son Mark Govoni, of Dartmouth, her son David Govoni, his wife Lisa, and their daughters Katelyn, of Forestdale and Ashley, of Boston, MA. Jane is also survived by her brother, Peter Vermilyea, and his wife Sarah, of Port Deposit, Maryland, and brother David Vermilyea, and his wife Joyce, of Ellerslie, Georgia. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Pizzotti, of East Sandwich, as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Graveside service will be held at the Sandwich Town Cemetery on Tuesday, March 5th at 11AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to the cancer charity of your choice.
