A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, she is survived by her husband, her living siblings, her children, her grandchildren and their parents.
She was born on October 26, 1944, in the village of Kambos, Greece. Dimitra married Chris Christo in 1976, and together made their home in Sandwich, where they raised their children.
Dimitra was a master seamstress having trained at the most prestigious atelier in Athens. She had golden hands for creating stunning clothes, often turning what appeared to be mere fabric scraps into works of art. Her skill and craftsmanship adorned many residents of Cape Cod and beyond on their special occasions, be it weddings, proms, or other significant events.
Dimitra loved nurturing her family: making sure they looked their best and cooking their favorite Greek specialties like lamb youvetsi (her husband’s favorite) and patsitio (her children’s and grandchildren’s favorite). She was renowned for her delicious Greek pastries which she lovingly shared with her neighbors, friends, customers, and her children’s teachers and friends. Her kindness and generosity extended beyond pastries. Anyone who visited her home was treated to her delicious Greek specialties and Greek coffee, and she would often send them home with containers full of food to enjoy later.
Her greatest source of joy was her five grandchildren. She took delight in nurturing them, shopping for them, cooking for them, and teaching them Greek culture particularly Greek songs. Her grandchildren eagerly awaited the packages of Greek cookies (especially koulourakia) that Dimitra lovingly shipped to them when she could not be close.
A woman with deep faith and a strong connection to the Eastern Orthodox Church, Dimitra was an active member of Saint George Greek Orthodox Church in Hyannis as well as Saint Michael the Archangel Antiochian Orthodox Church in Cotuit. She was also actively involved with the church’s Daughters of Penelope. May her memory be eternal.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Dimitra’s favorite charity, The Smile of the Child, a Greek charity founded in 1995 that supports Greek children in need (https://www.hamogelo.gr/gr/en/).
A viewing will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, December 4, 2023, at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home in Sandwich. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at Saint George Greek Orthodox Church in Centerville. Burial will be held privately.
