Tom left Ireland at age 16 and moved to England and lived about a year or so with family members before he immigrated to Canada.
He worked and stayed in Canada for about another year or so. Then he immigrated to New York and worked there as a carpenter and got married.
At that time, his beloved sister Brigid, moved to San Francisco and later to Marin County. He followed her, and remained in Marin most of his life.
He became a General contractor and built many buildings in San Francisco as well as Marin.
At some time later, was invited to join the Olympic Club in SF to represent them in Handball. He became a champion player and given the nickname, of “The Whip”.
Later on, he purchased his first Sailboat, he named it Sligo, the county in Ireland in Tom came from. He became an avid sailor, became a member of the SRYC and won many trophies. He remained a member of the SRYC till last year.
Tom will be deeply missed by those he leaves behind including his wife Betty Searles-Fleming; daughters Kathleen Joachim and Glenda Fleming; Son Thomas Fleming; grandchildren; granddaughter Katlyn Eide; great grandson Kolton Eide; sister Brigid O’Toole; Niece Karen O’Toole; Nephews Michael O’Toole and Thomas O’Toole; as well as many relative and friends in Ireland and England.
Tom is preceded in death by his first wife to whom he will be laid to rest with.
There will be a Memorial on Saturday July 22, 2023 at Keaton’s Redwood Chapel of Marin in Novato, California at 10:30 am, a graveside service at Mt. Olivet in San Rafael will follow for those who care to be present as we lay Tom to his final resting place, and A Celebration of Life at San Rafael Joe's will follow the graveside service.
