Mike was born in San Francisco CA in 1930 to Mary Grace (Alioto) La Torre and Filippi La Torre. Mary immigrated from Porticello Italy, and Filippi immigrated from Marettimo Italy. Mike grew up on Chestnut Street in SF speaking both Italian and English. He was the youngest of six children. He attended Garfield and Francisco Schools, and graduated from Galileo High School.
Mike played baseball in local San Francisco leagues as a youth. His lifelong love of baseball and football was passed on to his sons, grandsons, and great grandchildren. He coached numerous little league teams in Tiburon, and is still fondly remembered by locals.
Mike had a 36-year career with Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company, where he met the love of his life Mildred Olson. He proposed at a San Francisco 49ers game, they were married in 1950, and moved to Tiburon in 1959. Mike maintained close friendships with many co-workers at Pacific Telephone, retiring in 1982. Never one to sit around, he began working for the College of Marin bookstore, where he stayed for over twenty years.
Mike loved being of service to others. He was a volunteer fireman with the Tiburon Fire Protection District for many years. He was active in the Mill Valley Lions Club, Telephone Pioneers, Sons in Retirement, and Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church. He enjoyed many ocean cruises, and bowled in local Marin leagues.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents Filippi and Mary La Torre, brothers Anthony and Dominic La Torre, sisters Mary Bruno, Nardine Sorrento, and Lily Chaskin.
He is survived by his loving wife of 73 years Mildred La Torre, sons James (Leslie) La Torre of Reno NV, Michael (Christina)La Torre of Reno NV, and Gary La Torre of Santa Rosa CA. Also survived by four grandsons Nicholas (Cindy), Daniel, Brian (Kali), and Michael La Torre, as well as eight great grandchildren Brittany (Autumn), Kaylee, Sierra, Madison, Joseph, Sofia, Siena and Sicilia La Torre. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews in the La Torre, Alioto, and Sabella families.
