Stanley M. Mattos (Stan to friends and family) passed away on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at the age of 95. He was born on November 7, 1927 and was the youngest of 5 brothers who proceeded him in death (Henry, Jack, Ray and Walt). Stan and his wife and our beloved mother Genevieve (deceased August 2011) are survived by their children Janet (Jose Enrique), Kathleen, Annette and Steven (Richelle) and their grandchildren Erik (Raquel), Katrina, Stephanie, Kyra and Adam. Another son, James, passed away at birth.
Stan was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and camping along with watching anything sports related. He and his brothers grew up playing many sports, but the one they all excelled at was baseball and was usually played at family gatherings. Growing up in the Oakland area, he attended Castlemont High School with his brothers. Stan was a veteran of the Korean war where he also received a purple heart and a bronze star during his service. He supported his family by working as a store and department manager for a local, family owned super market for over 30 years. Stan and Jean also spent lots of time and energy on their house and garden (the original fixer uppers with projects that often became hillarious because of small glitches!) and imparted this work ethic and caring for the family and home to their children and grandchildren. He enjoyed camping and vacationing in Lake Tahoe the best and is where he taught the kids to fish and hike safely on trails. The family is planning a private memorial service and ask that in lieu of flowers, to consider making a donation in Stan's name to The Wounded Warrior Project at woundedwarriorproject.org.
