Jay Sang Rhee was born on August 19, 1944 in Booyuh City, Choong Chung Nam Do, Korea. He graduated from Sung Gyun Gwan University in 1968. Upon graduation he worked at Shin Tack Bank and immigrated to US in 1978.
In 1995, he received a prestigious writer's award from Moon Hak Sa Sang Sa. He has published six books. Some of his books were seleted as textbooks for Korean Literature at Washington State University and at University of California, Berkeley.
In 2003, a video clip of him was featured at the Oakland Museum of California in celebration of the 100th Anniversity of Korean immigration to US.
He died on May 20, 2011. He is survived by his wife, Chong Yeon Rhee; son Austin Rhee and daughter-in-law Karen Rhee; son Simon Rhee and daughter-in-law Lisa Rhee; and four grandchildren, Tiffany Rhee, Tyler Rhee, Marcus Rhee, and Marisa Rhee.
