Emily Louis, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving daughter and sister at her home in San Ramon on April 5, 2023. Emily was the third of five children born in Sumatra, Indonesia on June 23,1934. In Indonesia, her father worked for the Dutch Government. As a child, Emily enjoyed taking ballet lessons. When World War II started in 1941, her family was separated and put into a Japanese internment camp. After the war, her family, who all survived were reunited and repatriated back to Holland.
In Holland, Emily met and married Robert Bamsch. She was the first in her family to immigrate to America (Michigan and then Los Angeles) with her husband. In America, they had two children, Blanche and Pamela. The marriage did not work out and Emily ended up meeting and marrying Paul Louis in 1966 and eventually moving to San Ramon, CA where they raised her two daughters and Paul’s daughter Ruby. Besides raising a family, Emily found time to work at Sun Diamond Growers. She enjoyed traveling, dancing, hiking, playing tennis, working out at Club Sport, watching the Warriors and was a member of the Red Hat Ladies Society.
Her biggest joy was spending time with her family and friends, cooking Indonesian dishes and making her famous rum bundt cake. She hosted many parties including having all her brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews over every Christmas Eve to enjoy a fantastic meal and sing Dutch songs as they opened their gifts. She had a very special bond with her granddaughter Gabrielle. Emily was always there for Gaby and never missed any of her singing performances or school events. She always had a smile on her face, brought so much joy to her family and friends and lived life to its fullest.
Emily was predeceased by her father Willie and mother Johanna Evers, sister Ankie Townsend, brother Bob Evers and husband Paul Louis.
She is survived by her children Blanche (Sean) Poynter, Pam (Tom) Elardy and Ruby Louis-Byrne, her brother William (Doppy) Evers, sister Kitty Watrus and sister-in-law Claudia Evers, three grandchildren Gabrielle Elardy, Kegan Byrne and Kelly Byrne and eight nieces and two nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family would encourage contributions to Autism Speaks, in Emily’s name.
