Born and raised in Quincy, Indiana. She was the daughter of Harley Ernest Caviness & Naomi
Pearl Brooks Caviness. She is survived by her sister, Marjorie Barnes, Indianapolis, Indiana. Her children; Penny Smith of Marana, AZ, Terry Purdy (deceased), Robin Gonzales of San Jose, and Todd Purdy of Coarsegold, CA. She was blessed with 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, whom she loved dearly.
Eileen was born the middle child of three girls to the Caviness family. According to her youngest sister, Marjorie, she was a very “happy go lucky” child. Nothing would break her spirit; even when she was disciplined by her mother.
Eileen graduated from Quincy High School and after graduation attended Purdue University in Indiana, taking practical nursing classes. Eileen joined the United States Coast Guard during World War II. She was stationed at the Coast Guard Air Station in Elizabeth City, NC and was a second class parachute rigger, upon her discharge in 1945.
After her discharge from the Coast Guard, Eileen then married, Dean Purdy in 1945. They resided in Iowa and that is where their two oldest children were born. The family then decided to head west to California for more opportunities and a better life for their family. Residing in Pleasanton, (Komadorski Village), Campbell, Redwood Estates, and San Jose. After settling into life in Campbell and Redwood Estates, their two youngest children were born. Eileen developed lifelong relationships with neighborhood families, especially, the Patterson and Cope family, was treasured throughout her life. Eileen joined a group of mother’s, in the neighborhood on Moreland Way, called the “Sew What Club”. The mom’s got together to fix and mend whatever needed repair, and chat and more chatting, etc.
Eileen and Dean divorced in the late 60’s and she remained single the remainder of her life, but definitely enjoyed her independent lifestyle. A lifelong dream came true for Eileen when she got the opportunity to finally visit Hawaii! That was certainly a very joyous and exciting time for her.
She retired in the 80’s from Wright Plastics in Cupertino, CA. Eileen took on a property manager position in the complex, she resided. Her final residence at Stonebrook Facility in Los Gatos, CA, where she was everyone’s friend with her witty personality and smiling face!
Eileen’s passions and love were music, dancing, family, friends, favorite breed of dog was the pomeranian, and her beloved football team; The San Francisco, 49ers!!!! She spent many Sunday afternoons watching the games at Todd’s house and still enjoyed watching them when she resided at Stonebrook care facility. Her happy and outgoing personality blessed her with many friends and she cherished those friendships.
“Celebration of Life” is scheduled for Saturday, March 23, 2019 at 2:00 p.m., Oak Hill Funeral Home & Memorial Park, San Jose, California at the Chapel of Roses.
