“That’s my Papa.” These were words always spoken with pride by Sergio’s grandchildren. Born Sergio Anthony Perez November 26th, 1944, in Managua, Nicaragua, he set out for California in 1958 with no idea about how many lives he would create, touch and change. A few years after his arrival, a trip to the airport and a woman named Myriam would change this man into the person we all became proud to know. A man of many words, both written and spoken, Sergio always said his family made him the wealthiest man in the world.
Sergio served this country proudly during the Vietnam War and learned to cook – a talent he would spend many Sundays sharing with his family. He tirelessly worked double shifts at United Airlines for 36 years to allow that family to grow. He wrote stories about his greatest love and his deepest pain and made himself vulnerable to all of us so we would truly feel the unconditional depth of his love.
A man of style, honesty, grace, and exceptional humor, Sergio spent his life laughing and loving. Sergio left us on September 12th, 2018 while listening to his music, and joyfully preparing for a trip to the woods with his family. Sergio was everyone’s Brother, Friend, Father and Papa, no matter your relation, we were all blessed to know him. He will live on eternally in our stories, our hearts and our children. “If God gives you lemons get some salt and tequila” Sergio Perez
