Robert J. Brandon "A Country Boy from the Bronx", 91, passed away on January 15, 2022 at the Terraces Nursing Home in Los Gatos, Ca. He was born on August 6, 1930 in the Bronx, New York to William and Mildred (Nerhood) Brandon.
Robert grew up in Bronx, New York. He graduated in 1953 with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from City College of New York and received a Master of Chemical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1955. He served in the U.S. Army between 1953 until 1955 with an honorable discharge, achieving rank as First Lieutenant. He worked at General Electric as a nuclear engineer from 1955 until 1990. Robert took an integral part in getting an award from the U.S. Navy to create the first nuclear frigate. The Nimitz Aircraft Carrier development was one of many key achievements during his career. He also spent many years developing nuclear power plants and worked with his team to respond to issues with the plants. Robert continued to spend many years advising for nuclear facilities worldwide. In a letter written from a co-worker at General Electric at his retirement; "I will remember you as a "let's get the job done right" person, who tempered decisions with sensitivity to the concerns, frustrations and desires of your people. You communicated in a way that treated us not as just "Heads" on the head count, but as individual persons who were much more than our job titles conveyed."
Family was everything for Robert. He was a role model for family, friends, and co-workers. He loved the movie "A Man For All Seasons" and anyone who knew him understood why...he felt it was important to maintain a moral compass and he demonstrated this throughout his life . He often said "beat to your own Drum." Robert married Helen on August 24, 1952 in New York, New York. They were married for 69 years. He enjoyed reading, golf, and family gatherings. Robert is survived by his spouse, Helen; his sons Wade, Glenn and Dean, his daughters, Joanne and Carolyn. Cherished Grandfather of twelve grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Per Robert's wishes he will be cremated, and his ashes spread at Cypress Point, located on the Monterey Peninsula, to the sound of bagpipes.
