Mena was born in Acton, California to the parents of Maximiliano Luna and Francisca Alcantar(a) of Santiago Papasquiaro, Durango, Mexico. She was the second eldest of a total of 14 brothers & sisters. She was raised and educated in Mexico where she obtained her teaching credentials & taught school children. That love of being an educator continued throughout her entire life.
Upon reaching young adulthood, Mena and her father traveled to the United States and it was during that time she met her future husband Nemesio H. Salas, together they had four children and five grandchildren. They started their life as a couple in the area of Hollister, Ca and eventually settled in San Jose, CA
Mena could best be described as a woman of strong faith and so full of life.
She was a strong believer in her Catholic faith, she loved to share its word to others but also enjoyed hearing about everyone else’s beliefs too. Many a times whenever those would come knocking on her door about their preachings, she had no reservation about extending a welcome & opening up a dialogue about their respective beliefs. She wore down many a rosary beads throughout her lifetime as she prayed everyday, she would do a separate reading for each of her children daily and any others who would happen to be in need at the time.
Another distinct aspect of Mena’s life is that she was so full of life and joy, she had a quick wit and she was the life of the party. For upon walking into a room, it would soon be filled with joy & laughter. Her laugh (as many would say was unique) would resonate throughout the area. She had a way of making everyone feel as they were especially unique & special to her, which in reality was true.
Mena is survived by her son Ignacio Salas & grandson Christopher Salas, daughter Hortencia Muntz (David) Langley & granddaughters Julie (Jorge) Barajas and Angelina Muntz, daughter Irma Salas and son Michael Salas & granddaughter Madison Salas & grandson Julien Salas. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt and friend and she will remain in our hearts forever.
