A woman who shared her smile with everyone she met, Juanita Sarah Pauline Self Johnson, 85, passed away April 15, 2010, in Sunnyvale, California. She follows beloved husband VIrgil Lester Johnson, 62, and her loving son, Johnnie Lee Johnson, 53.
Juanita was born in Dutch Mills, Arkansas, on November 15, 1924, and grew up in Westville, Oklahoma. She moved to California, met her husband in Chico, and was married in 1942. During WWII, as Virgil served in Eourope, Juanita worked as a "Rosie the RIverter" in a Los Angeles airplane plant. Over the years she worked as a waitress, grocery clerk, and secretary and bookkeeper for Virgil's business in Sunnyvale, where the couple settled in 1949 to raise their children. Juanita loved a party, especially with music and dancing, and she will always be cherished for her generosity in cooking for family and friends she held so dear.
Her loving and devoted daughter, Linda Diane Harvey, and her son-in-law, George Harvey, of Sunnyvale, survive her. She leaves the lights of her life, her grandchildren, Matthew, Mark, Sara, Rebecca, and Matthew's wife Claudia. Juanita is also survived by her loving brother, Edward Boomer Self, of Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Coming from a family of ten children, Juanita is also remembered by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Visitation is from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, April 23, with a funeral service to be held Saturday, April 24, at 1:30 p.m. both at Oak Hill Funeral Home in San Jose. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to a favorite charity.
