John Phillip Joyce, P.E. was born to Albert and Isabella Joyce in Los Angeles, California. At the young age of 16, John graduated Archbishop Riordan High School and went on to attend the San Francisco State College. The son of a fire sprinkler contractor, at 20 years old, John went to work for his father at Albert Engineering.
In 1961 after the sudden death of his father (Albert), John went to work at Geo. M. Robinson & Co. a San Francisco Bay based Automatic Fire Sprinkler Co. In a short period of time John’s ambitions caught the eye of Ursula “Old Man” Rhodes (owner of Geo. M. Robinson & Co.) Mentored by fire protection pioneer Ursula “old Man” Rhodes and his sons Owen and George Rhodes along with many other greats through the years, John became one of the industry’s most esteemed. John was a Professional Engineer, a member of Society of American Military Engineers. He was heavily involved in the National Fire Sprinkler Association NorCal Local Chapter. John became a partner in Geo. M. Robinson & Co. in 1983 and continued on to become sole owner by 1994. John retired in 2010 with over 50 years’ experience in the Fire Protection industry.
John’s passions outside of work was spending time with his family and most of all, his beloved wife Barbara Ann Joyce, who he was married to for over 58 years. John is preceded in death by his sisters Teresa and Rosalie. John is survived by his wife Barbara A. Joyce, his daughters Jacqueline P. Joyce, Jeannine J. Powers, and Jennifer P. Eaton, his sons John P. Joyce Jr. and Jeffrey P. Joyce, his Grandchildren Jeffrey and Ashley Bowler, Katelyn C. Laubach-Joyce, Robert M. Montez, Zane, Nichole, Emma, and Liam A. Joyce, Amanda Casey, Conner, Mikaela, and Aliyah Eaton, Shay and Haley Powers, and his Great-Grandchild Cayden Salinas.
A Vigil will be held Friday, March 16, 2018 at 7 p.m. at Lima Family Erickson Memorial located at 710 Willow St, San Jose. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, March 17, 2018 at 10 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisis Parish, located at 5111 San Felipe Rd, San Jose, followed by burial at Holy Cross Cemetery, 1500 Mission Rd, Colma. All are welcome to attend.
