Hatsuyo “Polly” Sakamoto, resident of Campbell, CA, died peacefully in her sleep at home on Thursday, September 23, 2010 at age 84 due to natural causes. She was born on November 23, 1925 to parents Chiyomi and Kiyoto Shinagawa. Polly experienced three years in Japanese Internment Camps at Santa Anita, CA and Heart Mountain, Wyoming, of which she shared stories with family members, but never complained of the hardships and misfortune she endured. She was a smart, strong-minded, no fuss-attitude, tomboy-type, who, through her later years, loved gardening, reading novels and doing crossword and Sudoku puzzles, and watching sports on TV (especially golf, baseball, football) while relaxing in her favorite bedroom recliner chair. Polly also enjoyed participating in a weekly bowling league with her Yu-Ai Kai senior group and she loved gambling in Reno with her senior group friends. Polly is preceded by her brother, the late Victor Shinagawa, and she is survived by her sister, Betty Fujii, half-sister, Fujiko Shinagawa, in Hiroshima, Japan, her two children, Craig Sakamoto and Jacqueline Yamaguchi, and grandchildren, Matthew Sakamoto, Kevin Yamaguchi, and Dorene Yamaguchi. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 30, 2010 at 7pm located at the San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin on 640 N. 5th Street, San Jose, CA 95112.
