Ernest A. Glave was known as many things to many people. He was a loved one, a friend, and someone special. To family and friends who knew him best, Ernest will be remembered as a very exceptional person. Ernest was born on September 6, 1925 in Rockfield Illinois. He was the son of Clara Henrietta Balsowski born (12/19/1902) in Illinois and Ernest Albert August Glave born (February 1891) in Berlin Germany. Ernest grew up in Chicago Illinois Ernest was raised with one sister Dorothy Diamond. Ernest was usually involved in all sorts of activities with his siblings. Ernest joined the US Navy directly out of high school and served in WWI in the south Pacific. Stationed in and around Saipan as a line chef for F4U Corsair planes while in the Navy. His fellow
soldiers viewed him as a brother in arms and knew that he was as much a part of their family as their loved ones back home.
Ernest moved back to Chicago after being discharged from the Navy and learned the Jewelry trade. He moved to California in 1947 lived in San Francisco where he learned and added auctioneering to his skills. Then moved to South San Francisco and finally settling into a new home in San Jose in 1961. He then served as a San Francisco reserve police officer and then a San Mateo deputy sheriff reserve. In the late 60s he was recorded on TV piercing ears at the Santa Clara County fair using the first ever made ear piercing gun. He Opened his first jewelry store in San Jose (1961) at 108 S. First street before the Redevelopment of the down town. It was called Custom Jewelers. He also purchased a wig shop and owned it for a few years. Next he purchased Al Mitchell’s jewelers at First Street and Post Ave. Then He moved to Park Center Plaza and lastly into the old Bank America Building at 12 S. first street. He and Dennis Hooker of Ace Loan Pawn Shop and started the Small Businessmen’s Association. He was a parking commissioner for the downtown for many years. He Worked for the coroner’s office in the late 70s as an investigator / appraiser subcontracting while still operating his jewelry store. For decades He enjoyed spending weekends at the flea market on Capital meeting people and making sales. Ernest joined the California State Militia under Army National Guard and became an advocate for veteran’s affairs achieving the rank of Colonel. Helped to coordinate the veteran’s day parade every
Nov. 11th this year being the 97th parade and establish the Veterans Clinic on Great Oaks in San Jose he spear headed the establishment of an alcohol rehab center in South Santa Clara County, Rancho Laguna Seca. Ernie was very active with the veterans’ organizations in the county for over fifty years. He was Commander of American Legion Post 399 and most recently West Valley-Memorial Post 99. HE was a member of the United Veterans Council of Santa Clara County not missing one Memorial Day or Veterans Day tribute, and serving as President during forty years. Ernie spear headed numerous programs to benefit veterans in the county and worked with municipal and county officials on several projects for veterans, most notably the Great Oaks Veteran Administration clinic in South San Jose. Without Ernie’s devotion and passion the annual Veterans Day
parade may have been questionable, and he was looking forward to helping stage the 100th anniversary of Veterans Day in three years. Ernest loved animals and there were always several pets in the house, mostly dogs but also cats and birds. He passed away on Dec. 22, 2015 at Valley Medical Center from an accident. Ernest was a good and kind person, an individual who will for all time be remembered by his family and friends as being a caring and giving person, someone who was a vital part of their lives. Ernest leaves behind him a legacy of life-long friendships and many cherished memories. Everyone whose life he touched will always remember Ernest A. Glave. A service will be held at Oak Hill Funeral Home on Sunday, January 10th, 2016 at Chapel of the Oaks. He will be laid to rest at Oak Hill Memorial Park following the service at the Garden of Heroes section by the 9/11 Memorial.
