Born on January 25, 1940 in San Francisco, Rosalind (Roz) passed away peacefully at home on November 23, 2012. She was the daughter of Albert (Bo Kay) and Eva Chan. Roz is survived by her loving husband Ed and will be missed by many relatives and friends.
Roz attended San Francisco schools and graduated from UC Berkeley majoring in music. A talented pianist, she taught elementary school choral music in Reed Union School District, Marin County.
She was a lifelong member of the Chinese Congregational Church and a member of The Chinatown Opi-Ms-Club.
Roz, as she was lovingly called, was great fun to be around, and she, in turn, loved being with her many relatives and friends, sharing many good times with them. She will be remembered for the numerous holiday dinners and the weekend mahjong and bridge parties she and her husband, Ed, hosted at their home, sharing their mobile home and fishing at Lake Berryessa with family and friends, and spending time with them at their timeshares. She also loved cruising and traveling the world. Just this past October, she traveled to Hawaii with Ed and their friends to revisit her most beloved places.
Born in 1940 in San Francisco to Albert (Bo Kay) and Eva Fong Chan, Roz was the granddaughter of the original owner of Hang Far Low Restaurant, one of the earliest dim sum and banquet-size Chinese restaurants in San Francisco's Chinatown. It later was sold in 1960 and renamed Four Seas Restaurant (site of Roz's Memorial Dinner). Her mother was an accomplished musician and painter whose paintings were exhibited at the Palace of Fine Arts.
Like her mother, Roz was also an accomplished musician. She began her piano studies with her mother at the tender age of four. Recognizing Roz's talent, Mrs. Chan brought her daughter to Lev Shorr, pianist with the San Francisco Symphony, for further tutelage. A gifted prodigy, Roz played in her debut recital in her early teens at the Century Club, and later performed as guest piano soloist with the San Francisco Youth Symphony as well as a featured soloist at one of the U.C. Music Department's Noon Concerts. After graduating from U.C. Berkeley with a major in music, Roz taught choral music in the Reed Union School District, Marin County. Everyone looked forward to the concerts which her students gave twice a year. For many years, she was the organist for her church, Chinese Congregational Church. She loved attending the concerts of the San Francisco Symphony and the Oakland Symphony and seeing the musicals, both on Broadway and when they came to San Francisco.
Roz was loving, kind, humorous and generous. In spite of all her health problems, with Ed's constant loyal and caring support, she found the strength and determination to enjoy life and lived it to the fullest. She will be sorely missed by all who were fortunate enough to have been touched by her in their lives.
A Celebration of Life wiil be held on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at 12 noon at HALSTED N. GRAY-CAREW & ENGLISH, 1123 Sutter St., SF.
