Very few got to spend time with you one on one.  I’ll always remember those moments   Cafe Trieste with Paul Kantner and cheap Chinese food.   We laughed a lot.  And one look from you said so many words.. I love you Mike.   You’re one of the few who really knew me.  

This is a shock and tragedy. 

I only met Mr. Leon three times in person. He was very gracious  to my husband and I in welcoming us when we first visited SF in 2007. 

He also thanked me when I wished him much success in the grand re-opening of the Eagle in 2013.

I was shocked to hear the news of Mike's passing. I am so sorry for the community's loss. I didn't know Mike very well but, I had the honor and opportunity to perform his birthday celebration at the SF Eagle ; it was my 2nd time showcasing the music I was developing after becoming a quadriplegic.
As a longtime patron of the incarnations of the Eagle for the past 20+ years, it has been my hub of connection to my LGBTQIA community and the main space I've had some of the most stimulating interactions with members within our diverse and complex community. The Eagle has also been my safety hub in SF. I want to personally Mike for resurrecting an historic community space, hopefully for future generations without the threat of ongoing gentrification and development.
I never had the opportunity to really get to know Mike, but he was always friendly whenever he saw me.

I met Mike in November 2012 when the SF Eagle was mid-construction before reopening. From the moment I met him he had my heart. He was a big ol’Teddy Bear and you just knew instantly that his heart was full of love and that this community space was safe in his hands. 

It wasn’t long after they reopened that he and Alex gave me opportunities to fund raise and work along side them. I loved having him stop by for a hug as I worked Coat Check and made sure to have chewy caramels in my candy dish and that our fruit salads at Beer Bust had some without pineapple for him. I miss him already, I’m glad we got to share a few smiles weeks before his passing when we served jury duty together. Cheers to you Mike, you changed my world and I love you for that! 

Mike was so much more than just "the big man" at the bar.  To know him casually was to think that he was a shy or disinterested  man.  But in fact he was a man who held words in reserve.

He was a listener, who appreciated the thoughts and ideas of others but was resolute when he wanted something done his way. And he was a guy that got things done.

Most of all, he had a rare empathy for how people were feeling. And people trusted him, because of his character and resilience.

You will be missed, Mike. I look forward to seeing you again on the next path.




Mike will be truly missed. We worked together since the opening of the Eagle. Right from the start, a friendship and bond was formed for the years to come. You will be missed!!! Love you man

My deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time. I hope the words at Rev.21:4 bring you comfort. It says: "God will wipe out every tear from their eyes,and death will be no more,neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.

I am so sorry to hear the loss of Mike Leon. At time like these we realize how short and how precious life can be. But notice what the Bible helps us in such difficult time. Acts 24:15 "that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous.” What a wonderful hope. May this is comfort you and your family at this time.
