Michael Patrick Murphy was born in Wantagh, New York on July 31, 1948 to John and Agnes Murphy. Named after his paternal great grandfather, this brown-eyed, high-spirited man began his life adventure.
Mike never met a stranger. Friendly, gregarious and curious, Mike was rarely at a loss for words or clever banter. He was a natural athlete, a gifted student and lifelong reader. He was an entrepreneur and a talented builder/amateur architect. He excelled at everything he put his mind and heart into. Whether playing rugby in his earlier years with his buddies, golfing with family or enjoying beers with friends, Mike embraced life fully.
 His keen intellect, quick wit and thirst for knowledge made for deep, thoughtful and, at times, confounding discussions. He shared his opinions frequently and often!
 After college, Mike headed west, first to Lake Tahoe, then to his adopted city of San Francisco. It was there in 1989 that he met and married Annie McLeod, his partner who equally matched his quick humor, intelligence and love of life. Together, they welcomed into their world in 1990 Mike’s most prized joy, his son Matthew McGeown Murphy.
 As a business owner, Mike was known as an honest, hardworking perfectionist. A job well done was his goal and focus. He was a compassionate businessman who never forgot the underdog or those in need. His big heart extended to his family, friends and community.
 Mike will be deeply missed by many. He was a loving husband, father, son, brother, cousin, nephew and friend. May Heaven be ready for this lovable and mischievous man’s return and welcome him home with a cold beer and a good joke.
On March 10, 2020 Mike succumbed to lung cancer. He is survived by his wife, Ann Murphy (nee McLeod) and son Matthew Murphy of San Francisco; brother John (Janice) Murphy; sisters Colleen Murphy (Bill Trubitsky); Maureen Murphy (Mike Daley); Kathleen Murphy. Mike is preceded in death by his parents John and Agnes Murphy (nee McGeown).

Always have and always will.




I still cannot wrap my mind around the fact he's gone.  We met in college at a soccer match...opposing teams and exchanged blows.  Next time we met was as opponents in a rugby match...beers followed!  Showed up at his house one night to recruit him as a coach...had a case of beer and a bottle of Cuervo to help my case.  He came on board .....best man in my 1st wedding, Godfather to my youngest daughter Maureen.....although he left K.C. in  1973 we talked constantly.  Never missed calling on my birthday or that of my wife Cindy.....I'll miss him always!

Rest In Peace Uncle Mike.  In the words of your father, "God bless."

Dear Murphy Family, I wish to offer sincerest condolences on Mike's recent passing.  I'm primarily sending this message on behalf of my deceased younger brother, Norm Handlan (12/31/06), as he and Mike were extremely close friends back in Kansas City.  All of us played for the KC Rugby Football Club, and Mike and Norm lived together for about 2-3 years.  What a pair they were together as they shared many terrific times!  I knew Mike to be quite a character- always the life of the party.  Norm and his wife, Pam, visited Mike a couple of times in S.F. and I know Norm treasured those times to renew their friendship.    After many years apart, this dynamic duo is finally back together once again.  Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.
