Mary Callaghan, or Missy as she was known to her students, passed away comfortably at home January 9, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Mary was born in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston to Irish immigrants Bartly D. and Sarah Ann (Clancy) Callaghan and graduated from St. Gregory's School and Boston State Teacher's College. She taught briefly in Boston but relocated to teach school for over thirty years in the Oakland Unified School District, primarily at Hillcrest Elementary School. Over her life, Mary was an avid traveler, martial artist and tennis player. She was also a licensed psychological counselor and studied the works and ideas of Carl Jung. She was devoted to her friends and they to her. She bore her infirmity with humor and grace and she will be greatly missed. A funeral mass will be held at St. Dominic's Church, 2390 Bush Street, San Francisco, Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at 11 a.m.
