Jim was also a professor of mine in the Scandinavian Department at Berkeley. I remember that he wore crisp, white shirts and presented himself professionally at all times. He was respected by both faculty and students in the department and was a role model for those of us who went on to academic careers.

I was saddened to hear of Jim's passing. I just received a Christmas letter from him which contained humor and hope.  May others read this and share memories.
Jim was my Ph.D. advisor at UC Berkeley. He inspired me to pursue my academic career, take a position here in Copenhagen, Denmark and remained a true friend.
I will always be grateful for his belief in me.
