David Alllen Orr, 79, passed away on April 18, 2019 at San Francisco General Hospital after a long illness. He was born in Detroit, Michigan on October 12, 1939 to parents Stephen and Verna Orr. He graduated from Highland High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1958 and received his BA in Psychology from the University of California at Berkeley in 1969.
David lived several places worldwide, and particularly enjoyed his time in Japan, where he worked at the Berlitz Language Institution for 5 years teaching English. In 1971 he taught at the Language Institute of Japan for thirteen weeks where he left an indelible mark on his students and colleagues, many of whom have remained dear friends over the years. David spent the major portion of his life in San Francisco, and worked as a tour guide, providing tours throughout the city and the state of California, as well as nationally and globally. He loved educating and entertaining people regarding the places that he knew so much about. David was a board member of the San Francisco Fukuoka Prefecture Association and enjoyed many events with the members of the association, including visiting museums, attending the opera, and picnics.
David will be greatly missed by his family. He is predeceased by his mother, his father, and both his paternal grandparents, Martin and Mary Oreskovic and his maternal grandparents, George and Minnie Ronken. He is survived by his brother Robert Orr (Dene) of Black Mountain, NC; and his sister, Susan Ring (Ray) of Hahira, Ga; His aunt Ann Hoops (John) of Midland, Michigan; his nephew, Luke Closson, III (Shirl) and their children Susannah and Caroline; his nephew Mark Closson (Marsha), and their children Colleen and Samuel of Perry, Ga as well as several cousins.
A private memorial service by his friends will be held at the Buddhist Church of San Francisco on May 11th. A Christian memorial service to be held in Wisconsin will be announced. In lieu of Flowers, the family respectfully suggests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or to San Francisco General Hospital Foundation at their websites.
