Following a brief illness, Carolyn Marie Giannini passed away on July 27, 2016 in the presence of her sons and husband. The quintessential San Francisco Marina Italian-American girl, she was born to Albino and Marie (nee Gius) Zullo on December 11, 1940, sister to her pre-deceased older brother Dr. Victor A. Zullo. Carolyn graduated from Galileo High School (1957) and San Francisco (Lone Mountain) College for Women (1961) and followed her mother's footsteps with the San Francisco Unified School District, becoming the fifth grade teacher at Alvarado Elementary School in Noe Valley. She met David (then a Law Student at USF) in 1962, they married in June, 1964 and she followed him to Quantico Virginia, where they had their first son (Davy) and eventually moved to Laguna Beach (Orange County) where their second son Tommy was born. Returning to The City in 1968, they resided in San Rafael for 23 years where her third son Matthew was born in 1970. Carolyn and David returned to her family home in the Marina District in 1991.
Carolyn was the loving Nonna to her 6 grandchildren: Tommy, David, Marie, Luke, Gianmarco and Nicolas, cherished mother-in-law to Michelle (David) and Dawn (Tom) and sister-in-law to Leana Giannini O'Keefe, Dr. Avraham Giannini and Sheila Giannini. She is survived by her cousins David (Walnut Creek) Robert (Grass Valley) and Leonardo (Los Angeles) Gius, Lea Zeme (Milan) and Maria-Teresa Zullo (Genoa Italy).
Always an engaging and warm personality, Carolyn "gave back" by being consistently active in the community, serving on the Boards and often becoming "president" of the various organizations with which she was involved, starting with the Navy-Marine Corps League; PTAs for San Rafael Public Schools; Law Wives of San Francisco; Lone Mountain Alumnae; The Ignatian Guild (president for 2 successive years) at St. Ignatius College Prep; Little Children's Aid of San Francisco Catholic Charities; Little Sisters of the Poor for St. Anne's Home for the aged; and, The Museo Italo-Americano at Ft. Mason.
She and David (with the boys, when possible) were also fortunate to frequently travel to Washington DC and the South; Italy to visit the relatives in Liguria and Tuscany; her beloved Hawaii; France and Great Britain - just returning from a wonderful tour of Portugal and Spain.
A Mass celebration of her life is scheduled for 10:00 am, Tuesday August 2nd 2016 at St. Ignatius Church on the USF Campus, Parker and Fulton Streets, San Francisco, with private burial following at the Italian Cemetery in Colma.
Carolyn's vibrant personality will live on with her sons, grandchildren and close friends. Please honor her with donations to St. Anne's Home for the Aged, 300 Lake St. San Francisco CA 94118 or your favorite Charities.
