Barbara Anne Resnik was born in Coscob, CT, and spent most of her life in San Francisco, CA. She graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree in 1950, with a Masters of Public Health from the University of Minnesota, where she met and married her husband Tony Resnik and had two sons, Mike and Gary Resnik. She was preceded in death by her son Gary (2005) and husband Tony (2018), and is survived by her son Mike (Sacramento, CA) and daughter-in-law Vicki Resnik (Louisville, KY), 7 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.
Barbara was a leader in the nursing profession, committed to the role of advanced practice nursing in the prevention of disease and care of adults with chronic illness. She co-authored two early and important papers on the expanding role of registered nurses in the outpatient clinic setting, with her physician colleague Chuck Lewis, in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1967 and 1969.
Barbara established the Adult Nurse Practitioner Program in 1970 at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), co-sponsored at that time by both the Schools of Medicine and Nursing. In 1980, Barbara established the Occupational Health Nursing Graduate Program, as part of the Northern California Center for Occupational and Environmental Health, an Educational Research Center funded by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. Barbara was a visionary and innovative nursing leader; she believed strongly in interdisciplinary practice.
Barbara was spry and had a wonderful sense of humor; she wrote well and was successful in grant writing. She educated a cadre of graduate students: registered nurses who made an immense impact on the health of patients, workers, and their families. The UCSF Barbara A. Resnik Writing Award was established in 1990 to encourage publication in the nursing profession. In 2019, Barbara established the Anthony and Barbara Resnik Scholarship Fund for graduate students in the adult-gerontology primary care and occupational health specialties at UCSF.
Until COVID, Barbara walked 2 miles every day, and lived independently at the Sequoias until 2021. The family wishes to thank the staff at Sequoias Health Center and the By the Bay Health Hospice Team for their loving care.
