Professor Fung was an inspiration to me in my own math-based theoretical bioengineering research over 2005-2021 on the overlooked physics of effects of prenatal ultrasound exposure of the unborn baby in the womb (in utero fetus, for ex.) that occurs routinely in Ob-Gyn medical practices in the U.S.  and other countries.  This was related to the research done for my Ph.D. in physics awarded in 1974 by The University of Vermont; the pace of that research on prenatal ultrasound increased in 2008 when I retired from the University of California system, via my employment as a scientist  and engineer at UC's Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, USA.   (I am now 79.)  I had a special interest in ultrasonically-induced residual shear stress and residual shear strain in human tissue as in the brain, and Prof. Fung was an expert on residual stress and strain in tissue.  We never met but may have exchanged e-mails years ago.    However, Prof. Fung  may have known my dissertation mentor, Prof. Wesley L. Nyborg (1917-2011), also a deceased NAE member, who died at age 94.  Professor Fung's colleague Prof. Robert Sah and I did exchange e-mails on a topic of common interest, indentation measurements of mechanical properties of soft tissue such as cartilage.  Recently, I saw the memorial tribute to Prof. Fung as produced by the NAE and published by the NAP in vol. 23 of their Memorial Tributes series of books.  (I saw it as I co-authored another tribute appearing in that same volume.)  Reading that nice tirbute on Prof. Fung prompts this expression of my heartfelt wish that I had known him personally and professionally, plus of my sadness on his passing.  To his family, then, including his children Conrad and Brenda:  Please accept my belated condolences on his passing, with best wishes that his legacy to bioengineering students and scientists everywhere in the world will endure and be productive.
