 I enjoyed worked with Mark over the past couple of months and was looking forward to working with him on the next project. Hard to digest this sad news as I still remembered the moment chatting with Mark a few weeks back. My utmost condolences to Mark's family.

My brother,

I miss you a lot. I miss the times you call me and we chat. I miss the time you visited NYC. 
Even though our personalities are very different but whenever I run into road blocks you are the first person I think of. You are always there for me. I remember when my car had EIS issue and could not start in single digit temperature you were there with me at whole time. I remember when I went through knee surgery you were the one who constantly check up on me and see how I was doing. Honestly I don’t know how life is going to continue without you on my side. It’s like paddling a boat with only one stick. 

I grew to love airplanes because of you. I remember when we were little you were always able to assemble model airplanes perfectly. Meanwhile I had glue on all my fingers. When I boarded the brand new Air bus 350 you somehow were able to pull out the paper work and told me it was delivered recently. It is unthinkable to accept you are gone forever.  You always understand perfectly when I say things. Even though we do not spend a lot of time together but to me you are always there. You are a pillar in my life. You are the first person I would call when I run into trouble.  

Till this day I still fancy the phone would ring and it would be you on the other side. Saying, “Hi, Albert
How are you doing?” You always make Christmas a very anticipated event in our family when we open your present. I always wanted us to spend the holidays together like most families but somehow it was not meant to be. 

Well, like they said every party has to end. Your current role has ended. We have to say good-bye.
We are not ready to say good-bye but there’s no choice. Recite buddha’s name and leave. 
Leave without vexation and be well. Farewell.

When my sister’s son had an accident and suffered from a serious brain damage, Yi-Liang was so concerned that he researched ways to improve the recovery and shared with us. Very often, as recent as last months, Yi-Liang would called me to asked my newphew’s progress. He would also asked my sister’s well being, concerning if she is well while taking care of the son.

Yi-liang’s quality of caring has halo effect I think. Last Sunday, I heard the unfortunate news and came down to San Diego. Upon arriving, Ryan took my heavy luggage, carefully cleaned the wheel and took it upstairs to the bedroom where I’ll be staying. In their home, I saw Ryan and Maggie comfort each other and their mother at this difficult time. I saw and hear their commitment to support their mother. Last Friday When I drove off leaving for the airport, I saw Ryan standing next to Hsuan-Hsuan, holding her shoulder, together they waved at me with warm smile on face saying goodbye. At that moment, I realized I’m looking at Yi-Liang’s greatest achievement in life. I said in mind, Yi-Liang, you and Hsuan-Hsuan have built a love-filling family and brought up two fine people who are caring and filial just like you. Your loving and caring not only shown through you, but also continue through those who you cared and loved, and they will bring those to more people.

It’s not easy to say goodbye to Yi-Liang. But I think Yi-Liang can leave this world with smile knowing he has left a legacy of caring behind, and helped many people become better persons.
And that’s indeed a legacy we can all celebrate today.

Yi-Liang is my cousin and is the first grandkid to my grandpa. He is eldest among the 14 of my generation. He was beloved by all family members since baby and is the pride of our family. I think my parents, uncles, aunties secrectly hoping my generation can all become as good as he is. At young age, he played violin in an orchestra that toured overseas. He got into top high school and colleges in Taiwan and US. He showed my generation a path to the academic excellence. With his inspiration and encouragement, many of us cousins followed along to earn advanced degrees. I followed his footsteps to learn violin, to his college, and to U.S. and here I’m today. I can say, Yi-Liang plays a major role in shaping mine and my siblings and cousins’ life.

Yi-Liang offered us the career role model in our early days, but what we miss him even more is his caring throughout the life.

When Yi-liang was in the high school, our grandpa was sick and admitted into the hospital. In those days, Yi-liang would went to see the grandpa everyday after the school. After some time, even nurses talked about the filial high school student who came to see the grandpa everyday.

When I landed in US in 1994, Yi-Liang’s home was my first stop. I still remember his warm welcome, and smile that melt away my nervousness as an international student came to US alone. He and Hsuan-hsuan prepared a lavish hotpot that I still remember till today.

Ever since Yi-Liang came to US, he would go back to Taiwan from time to time to visit not only his parents, but also aunties and uncles. Last year, he went back to Taiwan, cleared the clutters from his parents’ place, replaced furnitures and transformed the place into a senior friendly living space.

Any interaction with Mr. Chen always left you with a sense of warmth and calm because he just constantly exuded kindness and acceptance. It's been over 10 years at this point, but when driving home, I still often think about how much support you gave me the first time we met with my physics boat project. Without a second thought, he freely let us borrow his tools and gave out plenty of advice despite the fact I wasn't even working with Ryan or Maggie. 

With a reassuring smile and genuine curiosity, Mr. Chen always tried to engage with those around him. The way Mr. Chen could brighten up anyone's day was genuinely rare and his presence will be deeply missed.  My deepest condolences to the Chen family. 

Mark is gentle and beautiful soul. He uplifts everyone who is in his presence with his energy, his smiles, and his words. My beautiful memories of my interactions with Mark live on and serve as paradigm shift. 
May he rest in peace. My deep condolences to the family.

Hi Mark 叔叔,

I will always remember your kind, smiling demeanor as Ryan and I would be playing or doing mischievous things at temple or at your house. You would always seem genuinely interested in my life or talk to me about football or any other random things going on in my life. I wish that I got to talk with you one more time, but it always just seemed like there would be more time. That you would be enjoying retirement with my dad or I would see you at a temple event in San Diego. Thank you for the reminder that life is, in actuality too short, and to not get too caught up in small things and to cherish the time I still have with my loved ones. I hope you are enjoying a well-deserved rest, 叔叔. I will always remember your unique, deep, and happy laugh.

Mark 叔叔 was one of the kindest people you could ever meet, it was reflected in the way he treated others, his children, and his genuine care for the community. I am so grateful to have had built beautiful memories with him and his family. Thank you and Hsuan Hsuan阿姨 for making me feel always welcomed and comfortable in times where I needed it.  You will be so very missed. 

Mark was always a kind, upbeat, and great person. I will always remember the fond memories of him from temple and the dinner gatherings hosted by him and his family. 

My deepest condolences to the Chen family. It saddens me to hear about his passing. May he rest in peace.

I have fond memories of working with Mark over the years. I will never forget his morning greetings and our hallway chats. Mark will always be in our hearts and memories. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

I cannot express how shocked we were when we heard - Mr Chen was such a kind and respectful person, and it was always reassuring to see him pull into the driveway and talk with him throughout the years growing up and hanging out with Ryan in our neighborhood. I truly hope he knew that he raised a beautiful and successful family and is happy. My parents and I have always been so grateful to have neighbors who shared our values and intelligent, respectful and kind kids similar to my age so that I could be friends with both, and I think my parents have always been especially grateful that he raised a dutiful son like Ryan that I could look up to. Many people cared and respected Mr Chen, and the same people love and grieve with you now and wish the utmost love and strength in your grieving. Despite the move, we’re always a call away if there is anything you need, and we wish you the best and are so happy to have known Mr Chen and will always cherish that.

Mark, you were always so kind and generous to me and my family, and helped me tremendously when I moved to San Diego after law school. I will miss you and our conversations about college football. 

As with many others, I met Mark at Nokia Mobile Phones. I still remember the first time I was introduced to Mark, as I was met with his big smile. 

I can’t count how many times we went out for lunch.
Talking with him over lunch was always a pleasure, as was working for him.  A consummate professional.

I know he loved his family very much, and my condolences go to his to his family and friends.

Mark was a shining example of a person who always saw the silver lining in any situation.  His infectious optimism had a way of lifting spirits and bringing out the best in those around him.  No matter the circumstances, he always found a way to make you smile.  His kindness, empathy, and unwavering moral compass were beacons of light that guided those fortunate enough to know him.   Mark’s absence will be deeply felt, and his memory will forever remain in our hearts.   I extend my deepest condolences to Mark’s family during this difficult time.  May they find solace and comfort in the wonderful memories they shared, knowing that Mark’s legacy will live on in the hearts of all those whose lives he touched.

This is the last time I see Mark in person when I visited LA. He drove all the way from SanDiego to meet us.  

Mark and I studied in NCTU and U Michigan together for 6 years. He is always so positive and up lifting. I delayed U Michigan enrollment for 10 days due to Military service, Mark and my other friends helped me get rents housing, desk, chair, mattress, and light before I even landed in Ann Arbor. this helped me settle down in Ann Arbor in a big way. I owe him forever. 
Mark is also a very good violin player. I have a chance to work with him to reorganize our NCTU band into NCTU orchestra ( we have no music department then) and he organized string quartet to perform in freshmen welcome night and a few other venues. I enjoy working alongside with him. 

I am so sad to hear about Mark, he was a wonderful coworker. Always enthusiastic, helpful and positive .  I remember when he started at Nokia and his manager was so impressed he wanted to make him “rookie of the year”.   I loved working with him , this is a great loss.  My deepest condolences.

No matter how busy he was  he would always happily lend a helping hand.  

Mark was kind, considerate, and always smiling.  Even in the virtual team meeting without video sharing, we all could feel his warmth, inviting tone, and yes, Mark’s smiling face.

I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Yi-Liang Mark Chen’s passing. I knew Mr. Chen in the 90’s
at Hsi Fang Temple. 
He was friendly and helpful, a very kindhearted person. He always had a smile on his face when he was helping other members in the temple.
Sometimes, he would go and help the older members who had computer problems. It will not be the same without him. He will be missed.
